It's a pretty big truck, and the available 5.0L TI-VCT V8 engine offers a best-in-class maximum payload rating of 3,325 lbs, while the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 provides best-in-class towing of 14,000 lbs. While that's plenty of trucks for a lot of jobs, what if you need more? According to Ford, more is more, no questions asked. For really big tasks, the 2021 Ford Super Duty pickup is just the massive truck to call on.
The F-250, F-350, and F-450 are constructed from military-grade aluminum alloy, making them lighter and stronger than other trucks on the market. They're rated to drive responsively, pull mightily, and deliver plenty of comfort to the working driver to make sure the job gets done from start to finish. Having multiple choices for a big job is a very good thing. Making decisions between multiple choices, on the other hand, is sometimes harder than we might expect. The 2021 Ford Super Duty is available in three models: the F-250, the F-350, and the F-450. Each of these models is available in six different trims, and there are three engine options, as well. So how do you know where to start?
One good way to narrow down the choice is by looking at vehicle capability. There are a few factors that go into the maximum payload and towing ratings, such as the engine chosen and the cab/box configuration. However, knowing the top limit is a good way to decide which truck is going to be the best fit for your job.
The F-250 has a diesel payload maximum of 3,940 lbs, which increases to 4,260 lbs when the gas engine is chosen. The limit on conventional towing is a whopping 20,000 lbs, with a gas engine gooseneck/fifth-wheel rating of 19,500 lbs and a diesel limit of 22,800 lbs.
The F-350 nudges things up, with a payload maximum of 7,850 lbs. The conventional towing limit on this "middle brother" Super Duty truck is 21,000 lbs, but with a gooseneck/fifth-wheel hitch that increases to 35,750 lbs. This makes it a real step up over the F-250.
But if that's still not enough, the F-450 might be the truck for you. Only available with the 6.7L Power Stroke diesel engine, it can tow 24,200 lbs with a conventional hitch - that's 1,400 lbs more than an F-250 can handle with a gooseneck/fifth-wheel setup. When the F-450 has one of those heavy-duty hitches, its towing capacity increases to a jaw-dropping 37,000 lbs.
In order to do big jobs, the 2021 Ford Super Duty has is equipped with big engine options. The standard engine in the F-250 and F-350 models is a very capable yet well-mannered 6.2L gasoline V8. It has power in all the right places, with plenty of torque down low to get moving with a loaded truck or heavy trailer. It's designed to breathe fully and perform perfectly, with a mighty but manageable 385 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. The F-250 version is paired with a six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission, while the F-350 features a ten-speed transmission for sharper control and snappier shift performance.
Also available is the most powerful gas V8 engine available in a heavy-duty pickup truck. This is a solidly built 7.3L OHV design, and with its cast-iron block and forged-steel crankshaft, it's abundantly clear that this engine isn't here just to play games. It's all business and produces 430 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque. This engine also gets the TorqShift ten-speed transmission, resulting in a seamless supply of power at all speeds and in all conditions.
Standard on the F-450, but also available on the F-250 and F-350, is the 6.7L Power Stroke V8 turbo-diesel engine. This engine is not shy on power, with 475 hp and 1,050 lb-ft of torque just waiting to be put to use. This engine is also paired to the TorqShift ten-speed automatic transmission, with five selectable drive modes for standard driving, operating in slippery conditions, towing and hauling, eco-driving, and handling deep sand and snow.
Drivers who need more off-road capability can choose the Tremor Off-Road Package. An available addition to 4x4 Crew Cab trucks with either of the upgraded engines, the Tremor Package takes off-road performance to the next level. With enormous 35-inch maximum traction tires, off-road suspension with custom dampers, and selectable Rock Crawl and Trail Control modes, the Tremor Package is ready for anything. It even offers an integrated 12,000 lbs winch and can ford up to 33 inches of water.
While heavy-duty pickup trucks were once the embodiment of a straightforward workman-like attitude, today's heavy-duty drivers demand a vehicle that's going to be as comfortable for the long haul as it is capable. After all, why should the trailer and payload have all the fun?
The 2021 Ford F-250, F-350, and F-450 are available in six trims, including the base XL, XLT, LARIAT, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited trims. While each trim comes with plenty of comfort and convenience, each offers a few available options to make the long haul even that much better.
The XL starts things out with a very respectable standard package of offerings. Drivers of the Super Cab and Crew Cab have a six-speaker sound system and the FordPass Connect 4G Wi-Fi to keep them occupied, along with a 2.3" productivity screen. Speaking of productivity, there are two power outlets in the instrument panel, as well as a USB port in the lower console. Drivers can opt to add a variety of features to enhance the truck's basic capabilities, from Ford's Ultimate Trailer Tow Camera System to a CNG/Propane Gas Engine Prep Package.
The XLT trim adds an upgraded sound system, along with standard SiriusXM satellite radio. Available options grow the Productivity Screen to 4.2 inches and add both a USB and USB-C port to the center console. This trim provides a great balance between cost and comfort, allowing you to enjoy the modern features you need without paying for the ones that you don't want.
Things start to get really fun with the LARIAT trim. There's an available 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system to keep drivers entertained, along with a standard 8-inch productivity screen to display important information clearly. Ambient lighting, along with leather-trimmed heated and ventilated front seats, gives things a top-shelf feel, and there are six total power points and outlets throughout the cabin to keep the juice flowing.
The King Ranch trim sounds just as impressive as it is. Not only does it come standard with advanced technology like Ford's Pro Trailer Backup Assist, but it is filled with luxury features. These include King Ranch-specific leather seating with a 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat and an 8-way adjustable passenger seat, each with memory settings, heating, and ventilation. You will also find a standard Bang & Olufsen sound system and built-in navigation for a top-notch infotainment experience.
It may not seem like anything can top the King Ranch, but the Platinum trim does exactly that.
