Sweet 1978 Ford F-150 Features Period-Correct Mods From Another Era
This 1978 Ford F-150 isn’t stock by any means, but in this case, that’s actually a good thing thanks to its tastefulness.
In the wide world of automotive customization, many trends have come and gone, while just a few have endured and stood the test of time. There is a good reason for this, of course, and that’s the fact that not all of these modifications or trends were good ideas to begin with and quickly fall out of favor once we realize this. However, that isn’t the case with this tastefully modified 1978 Ford F-150 that’s up for grabs at Bring a Trailer, as it sports a look that will quite simply never go out of style.
The regular cab, short bed, four-wheel-drive pickup was refurbished around 20 years ago, a process that included a respray in its original Bright Dark Blue Metallic paint. All of the factory chrome is still present and accounted for, while the previous owner added a set of side steps, a roll bar with additional lighting, and chrome dual exhaust tips. The finishing touch is a set of classic wheels and tires – polished 15-inch American Racing units wrapped with 35×12.5-inch Mud Claw Radial M/T tires.
Underneath, this 1978 Ford F-150 has been treated to four-inch lift in the front and three inches in the rear, which helps give it the perfect stance and makes room for that beefier set of tires. A Rancho steering stabilizer and dampers helps make the driving experience a bit more pleasant, while front disc brakes help slow the rig down a bit quicker, too.
Inside the cabin, this F-150 has been treated to a replacement bench seat that’s trimmed in black cloth with patterned inserts, along with a CB radio that’s wired to an externally-mounted megaphone for those important announcements you want the whole neighborhood to hear. Additional modifications include a Kenwood stereo with USB and Bluetooth connectivity, pillar-mounted speakers, auxiliary gauges, and a Hurst T-handle shifter.
This 1978 Ford F-150 is powered by a 400 cubic-inch V8 that’s been treated to an Edelbrock intake, a four-barrel carburetor, and a stainless steel dual exhaust system, and sends power to either the rear or all four wheels via a three-speed automatic transmission, a dual-range transfer case, and a Detroit Locker rear differential. With just the right mix of mods, this 1978 F-150 presents a timeless look that pretty much any Ford truck fan is bound to love, and that should also make it a desirable item among auction participants, too.
