No more F450.....Welcome the F350!

Hey everyone,

Long time no type. I can now officially be part of this forum since I've traded in my 2016 F450 Plat for a 2017 F350 KR. I'm loving the new truck! EXCEPT for the HORRIBLE Turning radius which makes me cry several times each day.

Anyone figure out a good fix for reducing it to around 50' from the 57.8' it's at now?

Anyhow, here are some pictures of the new ride. If you watch my stuff on Youtube, then this isn't new news.

Cheers,

Yep it's a pain, at least the adaptive steering helps a bit.

Congrats! How long did it take your order to come in?

Will you be making a video on this truck?

Just curious, why did you go to the 350 instead of 450?

Ditto - we watch every video of yours in our house.. you've had us bouncing back and forth from B&W to the other hitch because all of your opinions make 100% sense.

Also, that reveal was painful for 10 seconds.. was thinking to myself "WHY DID HE GO WITH A RAM!??!" even though I'm a current RAM 1500 owner, Ford SD just have so many more benefits over the other brands.

Great looking truck! We did get the instant bid from autonation like you discussed - did you buy from them too?

Thanks for watching! Yes, I purchased the truck from Autonation. They gave me the best overall deal (considering trade as well as purchase price).

Though I loved my 2016 F450 and the 19.5" Alcoa wheels but I did not like the limited selection of 19.5" tires that were available for my truck. I wanted to upgrade at some point but found that it's unsafe to go even 1 size above the required tire for a 19.5x6" wheel. Also, upgrading to a new RIM wasn't practical simply because of the cost as well as the fact that 10lug wheels in the F450's bolt pattern are hard to find AND very expensive. That wasn't really the big issue for me though. I really wanted TPMS on my tires (especially when towing) and my 2016 as well as the new 2017 F450 does not offer it. The main reasons though is that the only true benefit of a 2017 F450 is the wide track front axle (which is a huge benefit) but not nearly enough to get me into the F450 this time around. In 2016 there were several great reasons to select an F450 over an F350. Larger axle, bigger brakes (the 2017 F350 shares the same brakes as the 2016 F450), Wide Track, Neither truck had TPMS, and beefier front frame section. The 2017 F450 does have a slightly larger brakes, but the frame and rear axle (Dana M300) is largely identical (despite having a axle shaft that is barely larger than the F350. Not enough differences this time around....but having TPMS is a HUGE difference for me.

Hope that helps!

Very nice Cobra! Congrats on the '17KR!

I've watched quite a few of your video's, prob not nearly as much as I do Nomatic Fanatic and some other full time campers (which I'm not yet!). But you have a good down-to-earth sense on things.

Oh, and great choice on the 350. I agree on all your points, and would like the below back seat floor storage (on Ram) as well. It's kinda like your 5er, you have a few great features in the different models which may be unique to each coach Mfgr, but you just have to pick out what's most important and what you don't want to live without!!

How's your easy ride spring shackle conversion to the new truck coming, or won't you do that on this '17?

Cheers Mate!

Nice truck.

I was also shocked that you went to the 350 in your vid, I was betting on the new 450. If for nothing else but the turning radius.

You could buy a wide-track Tow Boss F-350 axle from the previous generation and fit that to your new 2017; turn the steering stops out, and add some goofy fender flares...this would give you the better turning circle.

I have the same truck as you; I've gotten used to the large turning circle.

As for the brakes: The F-350 dually for 2017 uses the same exact brakes as all F-250 and F-350 SRW trucks do...same as they have since 2015 (14.29" vented front and rear).

Now, it appears the 2015/16 F-450 used slightly larger brakes - but Ford's info is sketchy so I could be wrong - but it appears these year F-450 trucks used a 14.53" front and a 15.35" rear vented discs. For 2017, the F-450 has noticeably better brakes at 15.39" front and 15.74" rear vented discs. The reason why the F-350 DRW loses out to the brake upgrades (since it can tow within 500lbs of what the 450 can) is because of the 17" rim size. There simply is not room to install the larger 450 rotors inside the 17" 350 dually rims.

The advantages of the 2017 F-450 over the 350 dually are: wider front track for tighter turning circle; significantly better brakes; larger rear half shafts with higher spline count; better-looking rims; slightly higher ride height; and maximum tow rating. Because of the wheel size differences, a 350 dually with the 4.10 is essentially on par with a 4.30 F-450 axle.

The disadvantages for a 2017 F-450 (compared to 350 dually) include a lower payload, lack of TPMS, limited tire choices, and only a single axle ratio.

I think you'll like the 350 dually. I contemplated a 450...really like the look...but I think I made the better choice, at least for my use.

That truck looks great in those colors. White gold is what Im looking at too.

I really would like a F450 just because I love the wheels and fender flares..

Can anyone share real world payload differences between 350 and 450. I know that 450 is less but I can't figure out how much less. The payload thread doesnt seem to capture any 450s for some reason. Of course I could be missing it.

Thanks and looking forward to new videos! Ive watched most all of em.

The payload is a result of the GVWR and curb weight. To keep the F-450 as a Class III truck, just like the F-350 DRW, both are rated at 14,000lbs GVWR. Since the F-450 has larger brakes, some axle differences front and rear, plus heavier rims and tires...it has a larger curb weight than a 350 dually. That is where the payload difference is. I think the difference is an average of 500-700lbs. Most loaded 450's have a payload around 4800 I think, while a loaded 350 dually gets into the low to mid 5k range.

Suspensions are identical, so that is not the limitation.
