When Volkswagen introduced its Type 2 Transporter in the United States, American carmakers responded in a myriad of ways. Chevrolet?s Corvan mimicked the rear-engine and air-cooled nature of the Transporter, but Ford?s Econoline essentially took the Falcon?s chassis and its line of six-cylinder engines, replaced the sedan body with a giant steel box, and pushed the driver as far forward as possible, well ahead of the engines.

Those changes granted the Econoline far greater flexibility. Cargo versions could have as many as eight doors, pickup versions could haul oversize objects, and the passenger versions ? which still wore Falcon nameplates for several years ? could ferry entire families on their vacations. In fact, camper versions of the first-generation Econoline incorporated pop-up tents in the van?s roof.

The second-generation Econoline came along in 1968 and introduced a few key changes. First, the cabover configuration was gone, replaced with a snubnose design and perhaps all of autodom?s shortest hood. The new design allowed a V-8 and Ford?s Twin-Beam front suspension, both of which supported larger overall dimensions and greater cargo-carrying capacity. The pickup version was discontinued, but Ford began to offer the Econoline as a cab-chassis.

That cab-chassis option became all the more enticing after the Econoline switched from a unibody to a full-frame design with its third-generation redesign in 1975. It also proved more in demand as more EMS operators across the country switched from car-based combination ambulance/hearses to truck-based dedicated ambulances following the passage of the Highway Safety Act in 1966.

While the chassis remained largely the same, the Econoline did receive progressively larger engines ? up to a 460-cu.in. big-block Ford V-8 and a 7.3-liter Navistar diesel V-8 ? and a somewhat more aerodynamic redesign in 1992. The same basic van soldiers on today, though available only in a cab-chassis configuration designated the E-series.

Always popular as a fleet van ? consider the first-generation?s green Bell Telephone service vans or the ubiquitous U-Haul vans based on the Econoline cab-chassis ? the Econoline has also adopted many a guise while chasing trends over the decades, from the custom van craze of the Seventies to the conversion vans clogging up national parks in the Eighties and Nineties.

First-generation Econolines remain popular among collectors, not so much for restoration as for customization. However, well-kept passenger versions like the second-generation Club Wagon and the aforementioned conversion vans, have grown in popularity in recent years. Prices remain modest for these vans despite the affinity many collectors and the general public have for them.
