Ford's F-Series pickup truck line was born in 1948 and is in its fourteenth generation. It has been the best-selling truck in the United States since 1977 and the best-selling vehicle since 1981.

The F-Series lineup has included a number of weight/capacity-based models over the years, including the early F-1 and F-100 light-duty models and the Super Duty F-250, F-350 and F-450 heavy-duty models of today. The heart of the F-Series lineup, however, is the half-ton F-150, which was introduced in 1975, during the F-Series' sixth generation.

Originally slotted above the entry-level F-100, the F-150 became the designation for all half-ton models starting in 1985, with a variety of trims offered across the range. Countless straight-six and V-8 engines have been offered early F-150 models, including Windsor-, FE- and 335/385-series engine families, including the 460 V-8.

Extended-length SuperCab and four-door crew cab body styles were introduced during the sixth generation, while a more contemporary design was introduced with the F-Series' seventh generation (1980-'86), which included the expanded range of body styles and, later, the introduction of electronically controlled fuel injection.

The eighth-generation (1987-'91) F-Series was introduced for 1987, although the cabs were virtually unchanged and mostly featured updated front-end designs. It was largely the same with the ninth-generation (1992-'97) models, too, which included a return of the Flareside (step side) cargo box, designed to attract more youthful customers. The popular Nite trim package was offered in 1991 and '92.

It was during the ninth generation that the SVT Lightning was introduced. Produced from 1993 through 1995, this high-performance offshoot of the F-150 featured extensive chassis and suspension enhancements, a front air dam, special wheels and a growling 5.8-liter (351 cu. in.) Windsor-based engine rated at 240 hp and 340 lb.-ft. of torque.

Reflecting the increasing use of trucks as personal vehicles, Ford launched the tenth-generation F-Series during 1997 and loaded the F-150 with more available amenities typically found in passenger cars. It was also the generation that introduced Modular family of overhead-cam engines - dubbed Triton for trucks - which included 4.6-liter and 5.4-liter V-8 variants in the F-150. Another revolution in the trucks' design was the introduction of a more conventional independent front suspension, replacing the longstanding Twin I-Beam front suspension that had been employed since 1965.

A second-generation, F-150-based SVT Lightning was introduced in 1999 and it upped the previous model's performance ante with a 360-hp supercharged 5.4-liter engine. It was hailed as the world's fastest pickup.

The F-Series' eleventh- (2004-2008), twelfth- (2009-2014), thirteenth- (2015-2020) and fourteenth-generation (2021-present) models continued evolutionary paths that kept the range, and the F-150, at the top of the sales charts. In 2011, the F-150 introduced the EcoBoost 3.5-liter turbocharged V-6, launching a new era of efficiency-balanced capability.

The tenth-fourteenth-generation models have included a number of F-150 specialty packages and special editions, including the Harley-Davidson Edition (2000-2011), the King Ranch (2001-present), Platinum (2009-present) and Tremor (2014). Ford also introduced the F-150-based SVT Raptor in 2010, which is still in production. It takes its performance inspiration from high-speed desert racers and has included a wide-body design and long-travel suspension.

While the Raptor is the F-150's current performance variant, Ford didn't forget the Lightning. It is the name of for a new, fully electric F-150, which is targeted for production in 2022.
