Let's break down some eye-opening figures for 2024: according to Fortune.com, the average price of a new car stands at $47,338.00. Pair that with the average new car payment of $738.00, or the slightly lower average new car lease payment of $606.00 (as reported by LendingTree.com). Meanwhile, the average payment on a used vehicle comes in at $538.00.These numbers hit hard because they underscore the financial strain many Americans face. To afford these payments, you'd ideally be earning around $60,000 annually, which incidentally is just about what the average American makes at $59,384 per year. And remember, that's before factoring in essentials like housing costs, student loans, insurance, utilities, and the ever-present expenses of raising a family. It's a stark reality: auto loans trail only home mortgages as the largest category of debt in the country. On this episode of the Hemmings Hot Rod Podcast, Mike Musto and Ryan Douthit of Driving Sports TV dissect this phenomenon and try to uncover its roots.

The best tire for a classic car is one that is engineered from day one to be used on classic cars, meaning it has the appropriate whitewall, load rating and speed rating to accommodate the performance and appearance needs of today’s car enthusiast. Commodity tires that you can pick up from the local department store are safe and reliable, but they do not portray the nostalgic look, due to contemporary lettering, tread pattern and size options. Of course, these mass-produced tires are also missing a vital part of the classic car recipe: a whitewall. That’s where Coker Tire comes into the picture, as the Chattanooga, Tennessee-based company has spent more than 65 years in the tire business, with an eye toward specialty products to serve the classic car market.
After listening to customer feedback, Coker Tire built a new tire from the ground up and it’s called the Coker Classic Star Series. It’s a tire that will change the way you feel about driving your classic car, and it’s a comprehensive product line that includes 28 sizes to fit 13- through 17-inch wheels. Popular sizes include 165R15 for vintage Volkswagen Beetle, 205/75R15 for Corvette and Thunderbird, and 235/75R15 for Cadillac, but there are many sizes to fill in the gaps and they all feature the same low-noise tread pattern and updated vintage-style sidewall markings. Many tires are available in wide whitewall or narrow whitewall to accommodate classic cars and hot rods from the 1940’s through the 1970’s.
Coker Tire strived to build a best-in-class tire and did exactly that by improving treadwear, traction, load rating and speed rating on the Coker Classic Star Series. A reinforced sidewall puts this tire in the Extra Load (XL) category, which is great for full size luxury sedans like Cadillac and Lincoln. The T speed rating (118 mph) is best-in-class, and the tire has a UTQG rating of 480 AA, meaning it has excellent traction without sacrificing the tread life. Coker Tire also improved the whitewall manufacturing process to ensure a bright whitewall. As with any Coker Tire product, the whitewall is built into the tire from day one.
Along with tire improvements, Coker Tire has improved its customer service, giving customers added confidence to buy direct from the world’s largest manufacturer of specialty tires and wheels. You can learn more about the new series of whitewall tires at www.cokerclassicstarseries.com.
