A 15-year-old girl has died after she was hit by a car early Monday in the 10700 block of Alden Road walking to nearby Sandalwood High School, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Elizabeth A. Ross had apparently just left her home in a small apartment complex when a westbound car hit her as she crossed Alden Road, police said. She was not in a crosswalk when it occurred about 7 a.m. just east of St. Johns Bluff Road and about a mile from the high school, according to police.

Investigators said the girl was taken to UF Health Jacksonville but died a short time later as the investigation continues. They said speed did not appear to be a factor.

Duval County Public Schools spokesman Mark Sherwood said Sandalwood and district officials are “deeply saddened by the unexpected passing of one of its students.” He said district psychologists and social workers are at the school for the students and staff, and will provide continued support as needed.

The Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who witnessed the accident to contact them at (904) 630-0500.
