Looking for any info on this color. Believe it's a 50's Ford color. If you can steer me to a picture of something this color would be appreciated. Tony
Alright I know this is a Street Rod and doesn't really belong here so be kind. This car is supposedly Washington Blue. Goodluck getting Washington Blue at a paint store. I went today trying to get it, even had paint codes for DuPont and PPG. What I got was a couple shades lighter. Washington Blue was used in (I believe) 30-31&36.
Mike Bishops's '29 roadster built for the book, "How to Build a Traditional Ford Hot Rod" is painted Washington Blue. There is a color sample chart with the standard Ford colors you can get from Dennis Carpenter part no. CA-2805, "Antique Ford Repaint Manual". The color Washington Blue is included in this chart. You also get a paint sample of the true color. It is actually a 1930's color. Call and verify with Carpenter's sales people that this is the actual color chart which includes color samples.
Hey Beemer, That's one kick-ass roadster. Why would anybody object to that? Not exactly a Streetrod with the Duval windshield, sprintcar steering, headlights, etc. More like old style, trad rod. Oh!BTW, I Love that color Thanks
The response was great. Thanks to all who sent info. I love the color. Will take a trip to local paint supply house and get back to you. Tony
I don't know if you are trying to color match Washington blue or just find a nice shade of blue. To me the nicest blue out there is on an Audi TT, or Mercedes. I always like to look at a full car vs. a paint chip.
Also look for Ford LYON BLUE. That's the dark blue used on '40 Fords. I've had it mixed locally. It was on their computer listing.
I agree the roadster is kickass, therer's just some people who'd probably flame me for pulling it from the Street Rodder website. If you find the Washington Blue paint code, PM me. I went in yesterday to get some mixed up and the local paint store tried, but what I got was closer to Ford Engine Blue, so now I'm out $50 in paint because I bought a color that isn't what I want.
Hey Beemer, Take your $50.oo a gallon makebeleve Ford Blue back to the paint store and have them add some black and possibly red toner. "IF" the colour ya have now is much lighter than Washington Blue, a complete dildo should be able to mix it, it's not that complex of a colour! Find a sample of WB and have it colour matched. Don't relie on their formulas on file, at the paint store, as they are ofter way off. Swankey Devils C.C.
Here is a 40 Tudor that looks close. This is supposedly a 35K mile car. Seller's number is 714-614-5584 maybe he can tell you the code, etc. Great color!
The Washington Blue we used was from PPG's "Concept" series. There was an excellent original, unrestored '36 3W in Tardel's shop during the painting phase of the roadster build, and to my eyes it looked as though the paint on both cars had come from the same can(s). Vern who has outstanding and well-recognized color perception regarded it with only slight reservations as "a very good match." The color has a wide range of hue and saturation, depending on the ambient light, but it always remains distinct and recognizable even under very low light. Mike
I painted my old heap with 1990 Mercedes Midnight Blue. I think they still use it today. Pretty close in my eye.

I used early 70's Volvo Royal Blue as an almost dead on, looked real good to me, match for my 48 ford dark blue. The blue looks like the one on Mike's roadster. I painted the outside of the doors and jams and hadn't painted the inside structure as it was still good and it pretty much was a blend for the original. Pat.
The Blue used on Roadway Express Freight trucks is Washington Blue. Paint stores will have the color formula in their commercial colors listing. The first trucks they had were AA Fords in 1930, and they have used the same color ever since then.
This had better not make Washington Blue the new RED I rang PPG in Australia, and asked them. These are the paint codes for DELTRON paint only: 4 Litres/1 US Gallon Ford 1928-1932 Ref no: FRD.*0034 Tinters: 723 736 702 700 Settings: 2953.2 6576.4 3896.0 4067.2 Ford 1928-1936 Ref No: FRD.*0003 Tinters: 723 736 702 700 setings: 2954.8 3578.4 3896.0 4067.6 I'm going to paint my coupe Washington Blue, so I have a vested interest in not seeing too many cars painted in W.B.!!!!!
I don't know man...the guy at the local paint store is a pretty big dildo . It was an issue for him just to mix the first batch.
So after a couple more hours digging on the internet for more info on this color, here's what I found: http://clubs.hemmings.com/clubsites/goldcoastmodela/techtips/Paintcodes.html This one (for Washington Blue code) is listed for DuPont as Cavalier Blue, used on Isuzu's in the early 80s....interesting and from the DuPont website (click on the first link for 1936): http://pc.dupont.com/hcl/servlet/com.dpc.hcl.search.HclSearchServlet?browsePath=Domestic+Cars/Ford/Ford+1930+-1955&Operation=102&carRegion=1&carType=Ford I wonder if they can still do it like that (notice the formula?)
Good call! It does sound like I'm going off a bit there, doesn't it? Chalk it up to my environment -- Sonoma County, in the heart of California's wine country. Mike
Hey, Be advised that Ford used two Washington Blues in the thirties...... the early mix had a green base, the later a black base mix. They are not the same colour, but do use the same name. Swankey Devils C.C.
I'm glad you pointed that out. I checked the DuPont historic color index to compare mixes between the 1930 and 1936, and the 30 has green in the formula whereas the '36 has black.
I wasn't trying to start a debate over what makes a street rod . Simply prefacing a picture so as to not offend anyone and seemingly I offended several. Sorry.
Here's Jim Gove's Washington Blue Deuce Pickup. This was an old 50's rod/push truck for the drags. It looks amazing in person. jonny
