The 2022 Ford Super Duty pickup range covers a lot of heavy-duty ground. Anyone seeking a seriously capable work truck should find something ideal somewhere between the F-250 and the F-550 Chassis Cab.

What’s the difference between the Ford F-150 and the Ford Super Duty? The F-150, one of the best-selling vehicles in the United States, is classified as a half-ton pickup. The Super Duty trucks handle the three-quarter and one-ton assignments. All are capable of excellent payload and towing figures.

Just like the F-150’s category, though, there’s some equally tough competition. The Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD stablemates are similarly talented. So is the Ram HD range. For anyone who might find an F-150 not quite enough, but a Super Duty just a bit too much, there’s the Nissan Titan XD.

The Ford Super Duty diverges from the pack because much of its body is made of aluminum. So the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) can include more of what the truck has to haul and pull. It also means that Ford could strengthen components like the frame, axles, and brakes.

Like its rivals, though, the trim levels of the Super Duty go from bare-bones to luxury grade.

Drivers who have been around heavy-duty pickups for a long time are no doubt familiar with the old approach of manufacturers calibrating their suspensions to be working best when the truck is under load. Fortunately, things have progressed to where the Super Duty is civilized and composed in all conditions. The Adaptive Steering feature (standard in the top Limited trim, optional lower down) is also a boon when maneuvering at low speeds, shouldering a lot of the effort.

Buyers aren’t necessarily obliged to spend extra on a bigger engine — the standard 6.2-liter V8 can handle most situations. The Super Duty’s highest payload capacity of 7,850 pounds is achieved with this engine in an F-350 with dual rear wheels and a Regular cab. Most F-Series Super Duty trucks are rated to tow between 15,000 and 18,000 pounds. But the 7.3-liter gasoline V8 does come with a more modern and more efficient 10-speed automatic transmission.

What is the maximum towing capacity of the 2022 Super Duty? That would be a tremendous 37,000 pounds, made possible by the massive 1,050 lb-ft of torque from the 6.7-liter turbodiesel V8 and a gooseneck adaptor.

Cab choices for the 2022 Super Duty are Regular, Super, and Crew. All three are roomy and comfortable. The XL model is the out-and-out work truck, with few concessions to convenience. The next-up XLT brings a little more civility, while Lariat trim has leather seating surfaces, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and the updated infotainment system.

An easy entry/exit driver’s seat with memory settings comes in at the King Ranch level. And a new interior color scheme for the top Limited trim is a Navy Pier/Light Slate combination.

There are plenty of storage spaces throughout the range. The center console is huge, and the Crew Cab adds a lockable compartment under the rear seats.

These 2022 Super Duty trucks are so big, they look more like they were created by architects than vehicle designers. Just as buildings imply important work being carried out, the Super Duty does the same.

The base XL has 17-inch steel wheels as standard, the XLT goes with 18-inch alloy wheels, and they become bigger in the more expensive trims. Because of its standard dual rear wheel arrangement, the F-450 has a wider front track than the rest of the range. Bed lengths are 6.75 feet and eight feet.

Lariat trim’s new-for-2022 Sport Appearance package brings a grille, side mirror housings, and bumpers in the same color as the body for those whose tastes tend toward less chrome. In a similar vein, the Black Appearance package is now available with the lower XLT trim. Atlas Blue joins the list of exterior paint choices.

ULTIMATE TRAILER TOW CAMERA SYSTEM W/PRO TRAILER BACKUP ASSIST
Anything that makes life easier while towing a trailer — especially when there’s reversing to be done, and everything seems the wrong way around — is particularly welcome. This package (standard in the King Ranch and up, optional in the three lower trims) provides a 360-degree camera image, reversing guidelines, and trailer-reverse guidance.

The Pro Trailer Backup Assist part means a self-steering system controlled by a rotary dial. It also works with fifth wheels and gooseneck adaptors.

TREMOR OFF-ROAD PACKAGE
As well as a pretty good FX4 Off-Road package, the 2022 Super Duty offers this Tremor package which is more extreme. It includes specialized suspension components raising the ride height by two inches, 35-inch Goodyear all-terrain tires, front axle limited-slip differential, locking rear differential, and Trail Control — a kind of cruise control for tricky surfaces.

A fording depth of 33 inches and a rock-crawl mode makes a Tremor-equipped Super Duty into a real off-road warrior. And it’s available in combination with the diesel engine.

In the entry-level XL trim, the 2022 Super Duty comes with single-zone air conditioning, vinyl flooring and upholstery, remote start/lock/unlock, manually extendable side mirrors, trailer sway control, trailer tow package with 7-pin/4-pin connector, trailer hitch receiver, cargo bed lighting, and a removable tailgate.

Safety features include automatic on/off headlights, hill start assist, and an SOS post-crash alert system. The infotainment system brings Wi-Fi for up to 10 devices, AM/FM radio, MP3 player, 4.2-inch display, USB-C port, and four speakers.

The 2022 F-450 and F-550 Chassis Cab models have dual rear wheel setups as standard.

Beyond the engines, cabs, bed lengths, and driven wheels, the 2022 Super Duty has trim levels going from the more civilized XLT and then increasing in plushness through Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited. XLT adds carpeting, cloth upholstery, forward-collision avoidance, blind-spot monitoring, 18-inch alloy wheels, 110-volt outlet, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration, satellite radio, navigation, and an 8-inch infotainment screen.

Lariat has heated/power-extendable side mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, power-adjustable pedals, power-adjustable front seats, leather seating surfaces, leather-wrapped steering wheel, self-dimming rearview mirror, rear parking sensors, and the new updated Sync 4 infotainment system with a 12-inch touchscreen, conversational voice command recognition, and a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system.

King Ranch comes solely as a Crew Cab with all-wheel drive, likewise the Platinum and Limited variants. It also has a themed cabin with leather upholstery and wood trim, heated/ventilated front seats, memory settings for the front seats and pedals, heated/power-adjustable steering wheel with memory settings, wireless charging, remote start, LED bed lighting, 20-inch alloy wheels, tailgate step, remote tailgate release, and the Ultimate Trailer Tow Camera System with Pro Trailer Backup Assist.

Platinum brings power-retractable running boards, LED fog lights and taillights, massaging multi-contour front seats, and adaptive cruise control. Limited tops the range with a dual-pane moonroof, quad-beam LED headlights, dark ash wood trim, extended leather upholstery, adaptive steering, heavy-duty 332-amp alternator, and six upfitter switches.

Some features in the higher terms are available in the lower trims as options, like the Ultimate Trailer Tow package. There are many other extras for most of the 2022 Super Duty range, such as the snowplow preparation package, FX4 Off-Road package, Tremor off-road package, stowable loading ramps, fifth-wheel/gooseneck hitch preparation package, spray-in bed liner, 12,000-pound Warn winch, transmission power take-off, and an aluminum cross-bed toolbox.

Big trucks need big engines, and the 2022 Super Duty doesn’t disappoint. The standard unit is a gutsy 6.2-liter V8 making 385 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. It’s connected to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The gargantuan gasoline alternative is a 7.3-liter V8 generating 430 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque. Ford has also pulled a masterstroke with the optional Power Stroke turbocharged 6.7-liter diesel V8, developing 450 horsepower and a stunning 1,050 lb-ft of torque. Both of these engines link up to a 10-speed automatic transmission.

The lower trims have rear-wheel drive as standard, with all-wheel drive on the options list. One change for 2022 is that the King Ranch and Platinum trims come solely with all-wheel drive.
