“I wonder every night, am I going to get to go home and see my wife and kids?” cab driver Chris Jackson said. Jackson has been driving cabs in Albuquerque for years. “People close robbed me at gunpoint, robbed me by knifepoint. Most of the time they run, they just don't want to pay it, they take off,” he said. Jackson was friends with Larry Mullin, a slain Yellow Cab driver who police said was left with his throat cut in a parking lot in late February. Almost a month after losing his friend, Jackson tells us driving a taxi cab in Albuquerque has become more dangerous than ever before. “I know a lot of drivers that have been robbed, and it scares them enough that they cancel their lease,” Jackson said, adding he no longer takes calls from areas of town where robberies have happened before. All the Albuquerque cab companies we've asked told us drivers don't have partitions or those protective barriers between the driver and the passengers in the back. “Every driver I've talked to wants partitions. They want something to protect us,” Jackson said. Jackson told us many drivers now carry mace or firearms to protect themselves from violent thieves. We reached out to Yellow Cab's owner, the company Larry Mullin worked for, to see if the company plans to install partitions. The company didn’t answer our calls. “We just don't feel safe, and something needs to be done,” Jackson said.
