    Disaster and Humanitarian Relief

GlobalCommit is a “non-profit incubator.” It is a non-profit public benefit organization designed to help globally-concerned citizens plug into whatever productive, vital causes they feel need to be worked on, whether that project is hyperlocal, or truly worldwide in scope.

GlobalCommit projects are myriad: pro-social civic engagement (Civility Movement), political, racial and religious tolerance (CoexistSTANCE), Social Media Emergency Management (SMEM) (Rockaways – Hurricane Sandy News,…

GlobalCommit is a “non-profit incubator.” It is a non-profit public benefit organization designed to help globally-concerned citizens plug into whatever productive, vital causes they feel need to be worked on, whether that project is hyperlocal, or truly worldwide in scope.

GlobalCommit projects are myriad: pro-social civic engagement (Civility Movement), political, racial and religious tolerance (CoexistSTANCE), Social Media Emergency Management (SMEM) (Rockaways – Hurricane Sandy News, Philippines Typhoon Aid), public health crises, urban renewal and redevelopment (Neponsit Home Redevelopment), even rural agricultural development (Feeding Liberia).

Whatever you feel you want to commit to, bring your idea to GlobalCommit, and, if it fits our profile, we’ll see how we can onboard your program ethically, legally, and responsibly.

GlobalCommit is based in San Jose, CA. It is the culmination of and next step after years of work performed by independent individuals all in good faith, yet as volunteer non-incorporated efforts. In January 2015, Peter Corless, through the fiscal sponsorship of Jen Q. Adams, founder of LAHAF, Inc. (Lend a Hand and Foot, Inc.) established GlobalCommit.

Thus, though GlobalCommit was a brand new organization, it is now the legal entity under which many pre-existing all-volunteer independent efforts are now finding the legal basis to grow and flourish. Programs created under GlobalCommit can continue to grow and scale through the organization, or, over time, may be launched as fully-independent non-profits in their own right.

    GlobalCommit is a fiscally-sponsored program of LAHAF, Inc., a New York City-based IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation.

Created and managed Facebook group for thousands of Rockaways residents, family, friends, donors and volunteers; the group is an unincorporated association created in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

Coordinated disaster relief and recovery information using Facebook, Twitter, texts, email, phone, and other Internet media. Responsible for Facebook group administration and community leadership, updating news, links to articles, and back-channel coordination between diverse organizations (government agencies, Red Cross and other non-profits, ad hoc relief groups and recovery teams, etc.). Interviewed by multiple news agencies as a recognized leader and spokesperson for the affected community.

Social Media work is performed virtually either in San Jose CA or in New York City, in coordination with "boots-on-the-ground" volunteers and affected members of the Rockaways and Broad Channel communities in Queens, NY. Spent December 2012 - January 2013 in the storm-affected communities, meeting with affected residents, community leaders, volunteers, and government officials.

Work in the Rockaways led to the regional "Walk A Mile in Our Shoes" for Sandy Relief movement (facebook.com/SandyWalkAMile) and other Sandy-affected region leadership activities.

"Walk a Mile in Our Shoes" for Sandy Relief is a social movement to stress and communicate the need for Hurricane Sandy relief funding in affected communities across the eastern seaboard, primarily in the states of New York and New Jersey.

It hosted community walks throughout Nassau County, New York City, and New Jersey on the weekend of 12-13 January 2013. It also held the "Walk a Mile Goes to Washington" event, bringing groups and individuals from across New York and New Jersey to Washington, D.C., to witness the historic passage of H.R. 152, the $50.5 billion Hurricane Sandy Relief bill.

Now the organization seeks to partner with all levels of government, offering local "Walk a Mile" ambassadors to help communicate the urgent and ongoing critical needs of the affected communities.

Peter Corless began his involvement with Hurricane Sandy through the Rockaways - Hurricane Sandy News (facebook.com/RockawaysHurricaneSandy). He partnered with Michael Sciaraffo of the Secret Sandy Claus Project to co-found the "Walk A Mile in Our Shoes" movement to raise awareness on a regional and national level.

A method and system thereof for implementing and controlling the electronic distribution of intellectual property using protocols other than the Internet Protocol. A request for intellectual property is codified according to a protocol other than an Internet Protocol. A service is performed to provide an electronic version of the intellectual property in response to the request, and a service is performed to provide an electronic version of terms for using the intellectual property. The intellectual property is modeled and offered for different types of distribution (e.g., for sale, rent, etc.). In response to a request for access to and use of the intellectual property, the legal rights and limitations associated with the type of distribution requested are provided. For example, a hypertext reference can be used to invoke the legal rights and limitations associated with the type of distribution. An agreement to these legal rights and limitations is reached and executed, and stored for subsequent reference and use. My family has been connected to the Rockaways going back to my childhood. We bought a house on the Peninsula in the 1970s, and my mother still lives there. Even before Hurricane Sandy hit, I had been monitoring NOAA/NWS sources, and tracked the storm as it made landfall. The night of its destruction, I listened live to the FDNY's Queens dispatch, which is carried over the Internet. While most phone and network service was knocked out in the city, I could listen as fires raged out of control. Breezy Point grew from a 4-alarm, to a 5-alarm, 6-alarm, 7-alarm blaze. I posted what I was hearing to other friends on Facebook. One of my elementary school classmates from the Rockaways, in tears at the news, begged me to help tell the world what was going on. By the next morning, this project was launched.

Monitoring events day-by-day, I organized a community of thousands through Facebook, sharing the often chaotic news from disparate sources. I've helped communicate with and even edited Red Cross and FEMA resources, correcting information such as street addresses as only a native son might understand. I've helped route food, clothing and even gasoline deliveries. I've brought attention to problems of bringing aid to shut-ins, power outages, sinkholes, mold remediation, and other serious issues impacting the community.

We share news about status of family & friends, report property and community destruction, and stories about survival of
Hurricane Sandy. We maintain resources for disaster relief:

    • In Search Of - for locating friends/family
    • People that are Fine - for located friends/family
