New figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders have revealed that there have never been more cars on the road than in 2024. There are over 41.4 million vehicles registered on the road in the UK, with the number of cars at 35,694,845. A big reason behind this is the improved availability and quality of electric vehicles. We’ve been asking dealers about how they think the 2035 electrification delay will impact on car buyers in this month’s Startline Used Car Tracker. More than four out of 10 (44%) think motorists will stick with petrol and diesel cars for longer; 29% that the move will mean the used EV market will take longer to develop; and 19% that consumer demand for EVs will fall.
