How do you know when to visit a service center? Yellow Warning Lights

Yellow warning lights are used to signal malfunctions that aren’t so dangerous that they require you to stop immediately, but they should not be ignored. Some of the most important ones are:

  • Service 4WD Warning –If your four-wheel drive system has a fault, you’ll see a yellow light that reads SERV 4WD. You can still drive over flat, stable terrain, so your best bet is to slowly head to a service center before you encounter conditions that require four-wheel drive.
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) – The TPMS constantly looks at the air pressure in your tires. The light that you’ll see when one of them is low looks like an exclamation mark, inside some parentheses, and underlined. Look for damage to your tires and check the air levels, even on the spare. If none of them are low, there may be a problem with the system.
    Check Engine Light
  • Engine Check/Malfunction Indicator Warning –This light looks like your engine and can be triggered by a few things. A loose gas cap can cause it to come on, so check that first. If that doesn’t appear to be a problem, it’s a good idea to schedule service quickly since another common cause can be a damaged catalytic converter.
  • Anti-Lock Brake Warning –If you see the letters ABS appear inside a circle on your dashboard, that means that your anti-lock brake system has malfunctioned. You can still stop by using your regular brakes, but you should get this system fixed immediately.

Red Warning Lights

Red warning lights are more serious issues. They often require immediate service and are unsafe to continue driving with. Some major ones to be aware of are:

  • Brake Warning –If your main brake system fails, you’ll see the word BRAKE in red capital letters. Stop immediately if this comes on and call for a tow truck. It’s not safe to drive with faulty brakes.
  • Engine Coolant Temperature Warning –A red light that looks like a thermometer floating on some waves means that your engine is in danger of overheating. This is a warning that your coolant temperature is too high. Turn the engine off and let it cool down before adding more coolant.Oil Pressure Warning Light
  • Oil Pressure Warning –This light looks like an oil can and means that you’re well overdue for a routine oil change. It signals that your oil levels and pressure are dangerously low. Stop the car right away and contact a service center. Continuing to drive with low or old oil can cause damage to your engine.
  • Transmission Temperature Warning –This next light shows the same thermometer icon as the coolant warning, but inside a gear. It’s a warning that the temperature of your transmission fluid is too high. This can be caused by strenuous driving, like towing uphill. Stop the vehicle immediately, shift into either park or neutral, and let the engine idle. It’s only safe to drive again if the light goes away. If it stays on, don’t continue driving. Overheating transmission fluid can cause serious problems.

Auto Start/Stop Light

When your foot is on the brake and you’ve come to a full stop, the auto start/stop system will activate. This shuts the engine off to help conserve fuel. A green light that looks like the letter A with an arrow surrounding it will be on when the system is activated.
