Dish with Carved Arabic Inscription in Floriated Kufic Reading "al-'izz" ("Glory")

Not on view

This dish attributed to Iran and similar ones with carved decoration under a turquoise glaze are among the earliest stonepaste manufactured in Syria and in Iran in the second half of the 11th century. The elaborate inscription on this piece shows letters shaped as a trefoil motif or with floriated endings, set against scrolls and medallion-like scrolls. They read, in Arabic, "al-ʿizz", translated as "the glory."
