DETROIT -- Issues with front seat belts not latching properly has led Honda to recall an estimated 500,000 vehicles in the U.S. and Canada, according to the Associated Press.

The automaker says the problem stems from surface coating on the channel for the buckle. That coating can deteriorate over time leading to the possibility of the release button shrinking against the channel at lower temperatures. If that happens, that can increase friction and stop the buckle from latching properly.

Without the seat belt latching properly, it can increase the risk of the driver or passenger not being restrained properly in the event of a crash. However, the company says it is unaware of any injuries caused by the problem.

The recall impacts the following vehicles and model years:

  • CR-V -- 2017 through 2020
  • Accord -- 2018 and 2019
  • Odyssey -- 2018 through 2020
  • Insight -- 2019
  • Acura RDX -- 2019 and 2020

Dealerships will replace the front seat belt buckle release buttons or the buckle assemblies as necessary. Owners of impacted models will begin being notified via letter starting on April 17.
