Western Ontario Reetment WAR SHORTAGE Does not affect our Huge Stocks of Not long ago Lem went lor his first airplane ride a new thrill which was climaxed by the order to bail out. Lem, along with other Canadian and American student paratroopers, plunged out in space to put into practice the instructions he had received on the ground. "I guess I was kind of scared," he grinned as he was interviewed in Vancouver, today by The Vancouver Sun.

Gunner Rowe joined the Royal C'inadian Artillery about two and a half years ago. Five months ago he was selected to go to Helena, Montana, to train as a paratrooper. JOINT SCHOOL Today he is back in Vancouver wearing a little metal decoration upon his chest to signify that he has successfully completed the paratroop course, The school is half American and half Canadian. Gunner Kowe states that the boys from either side of the border get along famously. In most cases there are both Canadians and Americans in the same hut.

Sole difference between the Canadians and Americans is that of pay. When Gunner Rowe attended the paratroop school the Cana dians were paid simply $1.30 a day without "jump pay." Their American pals got $100 a month. The pay of the Canadians has since been increased by 75 cents per day "jump pay." TOUGH CORPS Lem is 20 just the right age for a paratrooper. A paratrooper is tough plenty tough. Just to make sure that all the men are in top physical condition, they are taken on forced marches of 18 hours duration.

On a forced march the men are given just a pint of water and scanty iron rations and are marched for 40 miles. American equipment is used throughout. Rowe believes that it is the best suitable for paratroop work, although the rapid-firing automatic rifle has a ten-dency to waste ammunition. Before enlisting, Gunner Rowe was a clerk in the store of his father, H. J.
