Wood is the word at Doheny show of classic cars

Jack George of Dana Point works on making a palm-frond beach hat. He says he's been making the hats for about 23 years after a man on the beach in Mexico taught him how while he was on vacation in Mazatlan. Coconut palm fronds are best, he says: "They are straighter."

This 1930 Ford woody belongs to Bobbi and Dave Dellos of Dana Point.

Ted Owen of Dana Point turned out on Saturday with his 1950 Ford woody wagon. He says he's had it about two years and recently finished restoring all the woodwork, which he hand-laquered, "When you do it by hand, it just has this look, especially when the sun hits it just right," he said.

Trabuco Canyon residents Danny and June Lisch took their 1949 Ford "Shoebox" woody to Doheny State Beach on Saturday. Danny Lisch says he's had the car about 10 years and completed a restoration that he estimates took thousands of hours.

Bobbi and Dave Dellos of Dana Point drove their 1930 Ford woody to Doheny State Beach on Saturday for the Southern California Woodie Club's Doheny Wood show. Dave Dellos said he had had the car only about two weeks and was eager to park it and turn the motor off. "I don't want it to die on me!" he said.
