1958 VW Beetle For Sale

Ok...I know a lot of folks out there watch the website and probably wonder what VWs
I personally have in the garage. I sure wish all those beauties were mine...but Schwimmwagens and 23 Window Busses
are out of this working stiff's budget. But I do have a few of my own to treasure and tinker with.
This blue 58 Beetle is one of them.

I aquired this car from the sister of the 2nd owner, who was unfortunately taken off this earth a bit too soon.
He had bought it from the original owner, a family friend, a sweet little lady who lived in Northern California
which is where the car lived the vast majority of it's life. He had big plans to restore it but never got the chance.
It was offered to me with the understanding that I had to give it a good home. And I did...and I put a whole
ton of time and attention into restoring it to it's former glory.

This was a weekend and evening project for me...attacking it bit by bit and it was a true pleasure to do.
It had been repainted a non original color on the outside, but everything else was wildly original.
I had the exterior resprayed in the original blue, replaced the window rubbers, fender beading, etc
and carefully polished and re-installed all the original trims. I repainted the wheels in the proper colors
and installed some whitewall tire rings on the radial tires.

It really turned out beautiful and I smile every time I look at it.
Ive got some other projects calling at me at the moment, so I decided it was time to put this up for sale.
Im in no hurry...I enjoy looking at it and taking it on little drives through the valley. It can stay with me as long as it likes.
But when the time comes, I will see it off...but as with the prior owner...I want to see it go to a good home.

1958 was a pretty significant year in Beetle production...new larger rear window, re-shaped engine lid,
whole new dashboard, and a whole lot more. Still many early attributes remained and the 58-59 models
are quite highly prized in the "square window" realm.

The color of this one is truly one of my favorites... L334 "Firn Blue".
Its one of only a few metallic colors used by VW back in the day, and it is a perfect blend of blue and silver...kinda icy
in appearance and just plain pretty as can be.

here in the bright sun you can see the metallic...pretty neat.
Another thing to mention here as you look at the body trim...I kept the original stuff.
Oh sure I could have bought new stainless stel stuff, but there was something cool about re-using the genuine article
There are a few dings and scratches in the trim, but it helps legitimize the car in my eyes.

The car came out of Oregon when I bought it, but the plate frame on the front is California all the way.

Horn grille with the block off behind it.
All of the body panels on this car are original to the car...even the running boards!!

New turn signal rubber and chrome signal housings...new fender beading as well.

Tires are radials on the properly painted two tone wheels, painted center hubcaps and whitewall tire rings give it that classic look
while retaining a decent ride and handling.

The running boards are original...and this little detail that shows how the ribs on the rubber stop short of the edge
is one of the things that you rarely see on VWs today.

Window scrapers have been replaced...

Window rubber is all new, but the aluminum trim is the original.
All galss except for the windshield is original.
It had the original windshield in it when I got it...but it broke during re-installation.

Stock and proper original glass lens "snowflake" taillights.

The "square window"

Maybe not quite as sexy as the back of an Oval...but still...

Very straight car...smooth down the sides, never any wrecks, never any rust.

Paintwork came out quite nice.
I wont call it perfect, as it isn't, but considering this is the finish straight out of the gun,
with no color-sanding or buffing...it's quite sweet indeed.

The paint under the engine lid and on the apron here are original...and the 36 horse engine is the original
documented "numbers matching" original to the car!
Huge cool factor here!

The engine has been cleaned and detailed, but the paint on the fan shroud is the original finish.
The generator was replaced recently as was the fuel pump and voltage regulator.
The engine runs quite well.
The trans is the original split case unit that too functions properly.
The brakes have been redone with all new soft lines, new master and wheel cylinders too.

The engine number matches that on the Birth Certificate that I ordered from Wolfsburg.

Correct and original vacuum advance distributor.

Original paint under the engine lid.

Original finish on the rear apron as well.

Underside of the engine is unremarkable, but it's not a leaker and is all very much correct and as it should be.

The chassis of the car is amazingly solid...even under the battery it is solid and sound.
This is the sort of car that VW nuts dream of finding...no rust, no repairs, and very very original and unmolested.

years of grease build up on the front end...oh sure...maybe I should have cleaned that all up,
and I might some day...but not yet.

Front apron is superbly straight!

Under the front hood is all original paint as well...unrestored, yet clean and presentable.
I have the jack and the matching spare wheel and tire...just not in place in these photos.

original fiberboard wiring cover in amazing shape...original trunk liner is pretty nice too!

Super straight in here...dreamy!

Wow!
A little spill damage to the paint around the brake fluid resevoir...I didnt want to deal with touching up the paint in here
I wanted to leave it as it was...no explanations of what was painted and what was not.
I certainly can touch up this area if desired though...

Body tags are nice and bright and clean.

Underside of the hood has a texture coating on it...but it is the original 4 tab hood.
It had the normal crack in the edge near the hood prop from someone giving it a push closed before releasing the rod.
I had this repaired and currently have the hood prop disconnected so it doesnt happen again by mistake.

Hood is very straight though...other than the edge repair...it has no damage.

Beauty.

The inside of the car is all original with the exception of the seatcovers.
When I got the car it had some quickie black vinyl jobs on it and I carefully removed them to expose the original cloth upholstery.
It was unfortunately too far gone to leave it exposed, so I decided to go vinyl in blue with off white piping.
The original material was left underneath in case someone ever wanted to try to put it back...it was a wornderful fabric.
Anyway...the rest is all original...paint on the dash, door panels, headliner, carpets and rubber mats...all are original to the car.

The seats look nice in vinyl and they are clean and comfortable.
Paint on the seat frames is original finish.

Rear seat also is new.

headliner and caroets are the originals and are in pretty decent shape for their age!

Nothing beats that original material...and the smell is like fine perfume to a VW nut!

there is one small hole in the headliner visable in this photo.
There is some wear around the edges in spots as well...but for being such a fragile cloth...its in pretty impressive shape.

Steering wheel is unrestored and shows the delicate wear of time.
The dash is excellent...and to think that it has never had a radio installed is also a pretty neat thing!

Odometer reads 536 miles.
Im sure that is not original, but I feel it is a safe bet to call it 100,536 original on the car.

Rare Denhe thermometer fuel gauge.
Original keys.

Dash paint is all original and boy does it shine nice!!

original owners manual in near mint condition.

Birth certificate from Germany

Documentation of the numbers matching engine.
(remember to drop the "2" off the case number)

This sweet little thing is the original owner of the car who kept such nice care of it all these years.

I put some noew coco mats in to protect the original mats.
I didnt really scrub this all up like crazy...I think with a little more effort it could look even nicer!

Nice to see the wear and patina...its character that gets totally lost with a fully restored car.

original mats beneath

original door panels

Door latches still shine!

great shape!

A little wear on the edges of the rugs...but the door jams are clean and totally solid.

Nice!

So in closing...this is one of my personal babies.
Its a nice car...not perfect, but wonderfully honest and original.
As I type this and look at all the photos...Im convincing myself I should keep it...dang it looks sweet!
But everything has it's time...Ive had my fun, now it is your turn!
