1951 VW Beetle Sedan For Sale

This truly gorgeous deluxe model split sedan is a fully restored example
with a solid history, numbers matching original engine and a wonderful level of detail.

The car was in a private collection in Finland and was recently brought to the US.
Before coming to sunny California , the car was driven from Belgium to Germany and back
as a part of the BBT Caravan to the legendary Hessisch Oldendorf Vintage VW meet.
900 kilometers of smooth running and driving it performed beautifully.

Once here in California it also ran in the Speedwell Rally to the So Cal VW Treffen.
Not only is the car a truly beautiful example, it is one that can be driven and enjoyed.
It is not a trailer queen, it is fully sorted and everything works.

The brown beauty is a long way from its original home in Finland!
Not a whole lot of palm trees there!

There is really nothing like a split when it comes to the VW world.
There is a aura to these cars that just grabs attention like nothing else.
When you arrive at an event in a split...people notice.

You may notice the red light behind the vent here...this is a third brake light
that has been carefully tucked in place. With the original brake lights being so dim
it is nice to have a little extra light to keep people informed of your actions.
The car has also been wired for auxiliary turn signals that easily attach to the rear bumper.
(included in the sale but removed for photos)

The color is called Chestnut Brown and it is the correct original color for the car.

All stock and never modified, this is what a classic VW should be.

A few tasteful accessories such as the whitewall tires, mudflaps and gravel guards.

Paint and body on the car is very nice quality and it obviously has been well kept and cared for.

Damn... she's pretty...wow...look at that!
(wipes drool from keyboard)

I really went nuts with photos on this car just because I got so lost in it...every angle it just looks so sweet.
My apologies for the image overload...but I figure it is better to show more than not enough.

This is a late 51 production car, so it has the desirable "crotch coolers" in the front quarters.

Again... so many pics...but they all look so nice I wanted to share them all!

In shade the color turns very dark and at night it takes on an almost black appearance.
Great reflections in the paint work, it is super smooth and straight.

All lights, signals, wipers, horn, etc are functional.
Even the clock works and keeps time when wound.

VW logo on the headlight lenses.

Bulb type headlights, not sealed beams

Crotch coolers!
These babies really work too...its amazing how nice it is to have a little air
circulation under the dash. Its a shame this attribute was so short lived in VW production.

Wipers are the correct wire style arms.

Solid hood emblem.
Body trim is stainless.

So shiny!

Underneath the car is excellent as well.
This was a full nut and bolt restoration.
It was not "over-restored" like many I have seen with glossy finish below,
this is done with a factory style finish to the chassis and suspension.

Dreamy clean and solid under here.
Certainly show level if you are into that sort of thing, but it is properly sorted
and built to be a reliable driver. I must say in all honesty, this split drives better than
any other one I have ever driven...and I have driven a few.

Inner fenders are treated with a clean smooth undercoat that keeps the stone chips at bay.

Since the car has been driven some, there are a few water spots here and there and a bit of dust.
Everything is rock solid and smooth and well fit.
The fenders are the correct dimpled units with the raised reinforcement bumps
between the mounting bolts.

Mudflaps are a nice addition.

Original VW single tip muffler is in place.
There is a slight bit of surface rust forming on it as you can see and the
dark spot just under the apron is actually a small rust hole.
The seller has agreed to address this if desired by the buyer.
(it sounds fine actually...don't really notice it at all...in fact I had no clue until
I saw the spot myself.

This is the original numbers matching engine by the way, and the full "crashbox" split case transmission.

Solid car

Even when you look super deep it looks good...no stone was left un-turned on this car.

Front beam numbers for the extreme purists to look up in their charts and diagrams...

Excellent Firestone Deluxe Champion Bias Ply Whitewalls wrap the original
16" wheels, two tone painted with chrome caps, painted centers and pinstripe.

Correct hood handle and the Wolfsburg crest

Taillights

Popes nose!

Nicely detailed

Rear apron

Correct early lid

Clean in the corners.
Coil is a replacement...the original would have a star shaped pressing in the bottom.
Fan shround is the correct one with the seam along the top.

Wiring is all new and clean.
Cloth wrapped harness.

Clean

The "T" air cleaner

Bosch 383 flat top distributor is correct

Engine number is the original and is documented in the service booklet from its early years.

Looks great and really runs fantastic!

Wow

The car features a pair of extremely rare Basta accessory "breakaway" semaphores that
have a spring loaded base, allowing the stalk to flex in case of an impact.

Nice detail in the door jams, everything is as new.

Proper grooved door handles and escutcheons

Proper "bat wing" steering wheel

Glove boxes are excellent...original owners manual and service book
as well as other records and history of the car are included.

Jams are clean, hardware all in place.
Ive seen these vibration damper rubbers used in Europe on
cars before...not something you see here in the US normally.
These help with door alignment as well as reducing vibration.
They just stick on and can be easily removed if desired.

Excellent German square weave carpets and tan rubber mats.

Floors under the mats are spotless

Sorry for the fuzzy shot here...headliner fit is excellent

Correct early seats with the curved backrests.
Interior looks wonderful.

Seat frames are finished nicely

Armrest looks great

Beautiful!

Matching spare wheel and tire

Spare tire well is super straight and clean.

Tags and numbers all in place.

Wiring detail

Everything is nice and clean and fits and functions as it should.

Detail of the logo on the semaphores

Speedo pod detail.

A very slight bit of foot wear to the drivers side mat...maybe could use a scrub, but overall it looks fantastic.

Rear seat has the correct flat panel and luggage strips

All proper back here with the luggage rails as well

Proper dome light

Correct ashtray in the rear

Correct Kamax marked bolts on the shifter

One of the coolect bits of paperwork with the car is this original registration book
that documents its early life up to 1960

Each year the car needed the tax stamps...

1954 and 1955

1953

1952 and original owners information.

The best part about this book is that it documents the original engine and chassis numbers.
A birth certificate from VW will document this as well, but to see it here within this
original hand written document from the period is just fantastic.

The car was sold new in Finland and remained there until just this year.
On the dash under the clock is the original selling dealer's badge as well.

An original owners manual is included

A little wear to the pages but dated June of 1952

Fuel tap and "ZAR" plate

Ashtray

The original selling dealers tag on the dash.
We have photos of the car before and during the restoration and this is visible in those images
it is not something added on just for flair...it is a part of the cars history.

The winder for the clock is in the passenger side glove box and when wound, this baby ticks away and keeps time.

98795 km on the odometer.

Beautiful colors inside and out...it all worls very nicely.

Fuel tank cap

Correct hood and hinges

Restored original Vigot jack

Full tool kit in the roll

Very clean and well detailed under the front hood.

In closing this car is just plain beautiful.
There are not a lot of split Beetles that come on the market these days and most that do have some serious issues
in condition or authenticity. Finding something with the correct sheet metal alone is a major task
finding an example with the original numbers matching engine is even more difficult.
This car has it all. Nice history in both photos and paperwork, a quality restoration using top quality parts
and it is something that is sorted out and ready to drive and enjoy.

Oh...and the chestnut brown paint color... just plain WOW!
