Up for auction is this 1974 Triumph TR6 Roadster finished in Black over a black interior.  Built in England by the Triumph Motor Company, the TR-Series of sports cars evolved throughout its production from 1953-1981.  The TR6 generation was debuted in 1968 with revised body styling by Karmann and a front anti-roll bar to improve handling.  Under the current ownership over the past 15 years, this TR6 has been comprehensively refurbished including a fully rebuilt drivetrain, new paint, a custom exhaust system, and a freshly reupholstered interior.  This 1974 Triumph TR6 is now being offered for auction by its longtime owner out of New York.

This TR6 is finished in Black with custom grey racing stripes and red pinstriping.  The car has been completely refinished under the current ownership and the seller reports a small scratch on the trunk lid. Exterior details include chrome bumpers, a black soft top, a driver’s side mirror, and dual exhaust tips. It currently rides on 15” VTO wheels with BF Goodrich Silvertown Radial tires.

The cabin is trimmed in black upholstery with a woodgrain dashboard. Amenities include a locking glove compartment, a heater, a factory pushbutton AM/FM radio, and black Coco floor mats. A black roll bar has been added along with Kenwood speakers in the center console and a Moto-Lita steering wheel featuring a Moss Motors horn button and matching shift knob. The suite of Smiths instrumentation includes a 140-MPH speedometer, a tachometer with a 5,800-rpm redline, and gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, battery voltage, and fuel level.

The 2.5L inline-six is equipped with dual Zenith-Stromberg carburetors and was factory-rated at 104 HP and 143 lb.-ft of torque. Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a 4-speed manual transmission. The TR6 features a semi-trailing arm rear independent suspension, a front anti-roll bar, rack and pinion steering, and front disc brakes. The engine, transmission, and rear-end are all said to have been rebuilt under the current ownership, and this TR6 has recently received a full-service including new spark plugs, ignition wires, filters, and fluids. The seller has also fitted a custom stainless steel dual exhaust system.

This sale will include some assorted spare parts and accessories along with a clean title. A nicely sorted British roadster, this TR6 makes a fine choice for any driver looking to get behind the wheel of a vintage sports car.

@Aero Thank you very much for the candid and detailed reply. I now understand the car much better. I'm reaching the end of a suspension restoration on an '86 Carrera, and just got the torsion bars delivered that I'd ordered in May. I fully understand how taking on a restoration can consume a lot of time and dollars.

@k_creek fair question , so the Tr was missing a hood and left fender at time of purchase roughly 06, it sat around outside till around 2012 with a tarp not garaged, when we started to work on it piecemeal motor pulled of body to work on that first, we spent around 10 k on body work paint and frame ,then proceeded to work on motor (2015)and all parts that you see in pictures, we did not need to do a head job on vehicle only internal parts were changed that were needed to make this roadster run perfect, new carbs manifold radiators Master cylinder brakes electrical wiring rack and pinion rear end clutch tranny , 90% of the vehicle parts are new roughly around 18k , we then proceeded to work on interior that was another 8k with roll bar and top, I could have done a complete head rebuild , but that was not necessary. I have invested over 40 k into the TR. You might say since motor was out why not paint make it look fresh well the simple answer is more time and money. I Was eager to get it on the road after all this. and never thought I would sell and could rebuild it again if I need to.
Restorations can be extremely costly and time consuming , I hope this answer your question, you are more than welcome to come inspect TR and drive it and you be the Judge.
    Cheers

@Aero Please provide more information on the rebuild. You mention that the reason the block is rusty, despite the rebuild, is just "one of those decisions." That's an odd statement, but implies you were involved in the decision. Meanwhile, you indicate you don't have any receipts in regard to the rebuild. Were you involved? When was it done? What shop?

Hi, Aero. Beautiful car. Curious why the block is so rusty. Seems it would have been cleaned up on a rebuild.

  • ColHunter (registered bidder) 2 years, 7 monthsago

Hi, does the soft top close properly? There’s no pics with it latched. Thanks!

@sportscarguy3 My preference is a smother sound , Customs pipes produce a very sweet sound ( PURRS)

What happened to that unique exhaust note that most of these TR sixes have?

  • Aero (seller) 2 years, 7 monthsago

@JakeMacZ all have been rebuilt engine tranny rear and yes upgraded ignition, it’s an amazing cruiser have a lot of fun with it , will miss it. Drive and go machine . And thanks for the compliments ?

Nice little roadster! I've owned two TR-6s myself as well as a TR-3. Has any engine or transmission work been done? Any idea of approximate mileage?

As I recall, the synchros were somewhat symptomatic. Nice thing though is that you could pull the tranny out from inside the car. I got to be pretty good at rebuilding the transmission. Very easy car to work on. If I remember correctly, the motor was sourced from a British tractor manufacturer. It's pretty robust.

Is the ignition system standard or does it have the up-graded Lucas CD system. I put it in both of my TRs. I also kept a spare Lucas CD system in the boot, Lucas electronics being Lucas electronics.

    Great looking roadster!
