Lions second half surge leads them past Mariners

THOMASTON  – The Oceanside boys soccer team hosted Belfast Friday afternoon at Sam Pendleton Field where the Lions came out roaring in the second half for the 2-0 win.

The two teams played different games in each half. The first half was all Oceanside despite the failure to crease the net. The second half was like a Lion had been awaken, as the tables turned and Belfast was the aggressor and Oceanside looked at times like they were out of legs.

Belfast goes to 7-4-1 with the win and is in ninth place in Eastern Class B Heal Point standings with two games left, Lincoln Academy Tuesday, Oct. 9 and Mount View Tuesday, Oct. 16. Oceanside falls to  5-6-1 and is in 11th place in Eastern Class B with two games left, Saturday, Oct. 13 against Camden Hills and Tuesday, Oct. 16 at Lincoln Academy. The top 12 teams in the division go to the post-season.

On Friday, the skies cleared as the game started, but by the second half the clouds were back and the fog was starting to roll in. The two teams battled to a 0-0 tie in the first half, but Belfast wasted little time in the second half.

Yanni Rakis broke the tie at 33:55 in the second half to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. Jacob Thompson assisted on the goal. David Flood gave the Lions an insurance goal at 11:01 that was assisted by Rakis.

Sam Kulikowski had 10 saves on 17 shots from the Mariners, while Philip Atwood had seven saves on nine shots from Belfast. Oceanside held the edge on corner kicks 3-2.

Belfast who started the season 6-0-1 had fallen on a streak of bad luck lately losing four in a row so they needed the win heading into the final two games to get the momentum swung back their way.  Oceanside has been an on again off again team all season which reflects their youth more then anything, but now needs to upset Camden Hills or beat Lincoln Academy to get ready for the post season battles ahead of them.
