Th e royal enclosures (german Talbezirke)
built on the low desert at Abydos are essential aspects for defi ning Egyptian Kingship during the formation process of the Egyptian territorial state. Spanning the 1st and 2nd Dynasties, they are artefactual records of an ideology that stressed the centrality of the royal person and the ritually charged desert landscape at Abydos for the identity of the emergent state.
