Having owned a white Golf Gti Campaign back in the 80s I always wanted to relive the fun of owning one of these great cars and always craved for a rare Helios Blue model.

So the hunt was on and I eventually found one for sale in a small cars sales in Kings Lynn. The car was complete and in standard form although a bit crusty around the sills, front floor panels, rear arches and rear panel i decided to buy it and so parted with £1200. Next job was to contact my mate Lee Proctor at the Crash Care Centre in Hitchin and asked if he would help with the restoration. Lee's work is amazing and a great example of his work is his own personal Escort Mk1 that won 1st prize at the Waxstock Detailing World competition at Peterborough last year.

Here are the pictures the day I purchased the car. I will be posting further pictures and will report on the progress of the car's restoration

The car being delivered to Crash Care Centre, Hitchin for the strip down

30 years of hard use starts to be really seen as the strip down starts

This wheel well pretty solid, not normally as good as this

Only started off as a little bit of rust, might need to find a new wheel tub

Rusty old bolts holding the seat belts on

Looks like its been mud racing in Kings Lynn

The arches looked okay before we took the arch trims off

Look at those poor old Pirelli P slots. In need of a refurb I think. Lucky the original Pirelli caps where still fitted, seen these sell for up to £100 each on eBay

Some good news the original boot sticker was still in place and confirms the Campaign originality

I'm liking this already and love that colour. Can I ask what your budget is or is it "mates rates?"

Haven't set a budget as I don't want to skimp on the project. A great deal of the expense will be sourcing new old stock parts but there seems to be a fair amount available still. If the car's original parts are still in good order they will be cleaned and repainted but if NOS is available at a reasonable cost these will be used to replace them.

A helios blue Mk1 is top of the pops for me.

What with this and the quattro thread in the Classic Cars section we're in for some treats. Good luck with it YC.

Now, where is Trooper888..?

This Gti Campaign came with all the original handbooks inc. service book. First registered on 20/10/1983 to Mr Clarke from Dartford, Kent. The car was sold by Euro Canterybury, Kent. Also have a complete file of receipt from previous owners and MOTs and Tax discs.

I'll be following this thread with interest as I've got a Mars Red Mk1 Campaign myself... It's pretty much rust free but is partially stripped and has been stood for nearly seven years! Must make time to do some work on it this year smile

A friend of mine owns A580MKL, a silver Campaign with a 20vT in it.

I have a Helios blue mk2 16v, it's a great colour. I also used to have a Lhasa green mk1 which comes close.

Watching this thread with great interest as at some point I want to do this with mine - all depends on the cost of course!

To give you an idea of what can be achieved by Lee Proctor at Crash Care. This Escort Mk1 was worst than my Golf when he started its restoration but look at it now.

Slowing taking it down to a bare shell.

Doesn't look too bad providing you don't look too close

Solid inner wings, to tell you the truth no rot at the front whatsoever, must have been all that leaking oil smile

Plenty of Pot Noodles eaten at lunchtime in this place

That rear panel isn't gonna stay around too long

Back in 93/94 I owned a Mk1 Campaign in helios blue, on an A plate. Car had all the booklets etc but I can't remember the registration- I sold it for £1750 to follow the ashes in Australia in 94/95. It also had a prolific oil leak... this thread has just reminded me of it. Are there any invoices from a specialist in Suffolk? I remember having the gear linkage realigned. Previous owner to me was a doctor who lived in Woodbridge, Suffolk. I think before that it may have belonged to someone in the armed forces in Germany.

Very much a mk1 fan and they dont get much better than a helios blue Campaign. I had a helios mk2, beautiful colour.

Looking forward to updates.

Will it be standard or a few modifications? The brakes were truely awful on my Scirocco and MK2 GTIs, so I'd guess these might be too.

The Scirocco yes as it has the same weakness of a mk1 which is the servo set up for left hand drive.

The mk2s were much better, a late 16v with 256mm vented fronts and solid rear disks is capable of stopping < tonne + 150hp. These are a good upgrade with a 22mm MC on a mk1.

You can fit 280mm G60 brakes make a decent upgrade as they are ok for 200hp, beyond that it's 305mm (Baby brembos) - assuming 4stud is still desired.

I need to check the invoices and see. I know it spent a lot of its mid life around the St. Albans area. Once I get the folder out I'll check this out.

Yes the brakes are bad. Might fit Goodridge braided brake lines this will help a little. The car will be standard and original as possible. The one thing I will change is fitting Bilstein inserts and Eibach springs. This will help the handling and also the stance as it does sit too high on the standard set up. Apart from that everything will be the same.

Maybe worth investing in a bigger master cylinder and or 16V MK2 brakes?
