Description

In its purest form, this numbers-matching GTX is an unabashedly ruthless street fighter. Free from all the nonsense add-ons that have increasingly clouded our driving experience for the better part of five decades, the car is tailor-made to be one of the most exclusive and uninhibited classics on American roads. And in addition to highly desirable aesthetics that are the direct result of quality restoration, it features an original Super Commando/TorqueFlite drivetrain that's backed by an original Chrysler Broadcast Sheet. If you're in the market for an incredible classic that's poised to rise in value, here's your next prospect!

BODYWORK/TRIM

Much cleaner than when it originally rolled down Chrysler's storied assembly lines, this slick Plymouth coupe has been transformed into a take-no-prisoners show stopper that consistently drops jaws. You won't be staying under the radar with the car's correct Scorch Red paint, which highlights a very clean body that's benefitted from a full restoration. There are no signs of rust or rot, suggesting that solid metal was a straight, trouble-free canvas before its detailed metamorphosis began. Not surprisingly, panel gaps are good enough to make factory-spec trim line up exactly right. And overall, this fully sorted classic is an impressive representation of timeless Detroit muscle.

Taking a lesson in style and brand awareness from the likes of Ford, Chevrolet and Pontiac, Plymouth outfitted their mighty GTX with a number of hot styling cues that better differentiate the car from its plebian Belvedere siblings. At the front of this coupe's broad shouldered body, a red-trimmed grille hangs a prominent “GTX” emblem between clean headlights, simple parking lamps and a heavy chrome bumper. At the top of that grille, a correct Air Grabber Hood anchors subtle “440” scripts between polished stainless, like-new glass and correct fender-mount turn signals. Behind that hood, correct White vinyl flows into a brute profile, which centers factory door handles and a correct driver's mirror amid standard marker lamps, black rockers and large “GTX” emblems. And at the back of the car, a second polished bumper, complete with small reverse lamps, frames bright taillights, polished exhaust tips, correct GTX trunk trim and a familiar “PLYMOUTH” emblem.

ENGINE

Fully detailed, covered in Hemi Orange and wearing few miles since its July, 2016 rebuild, this slick Plymouth's original, 440 cubic inch Super Commando V8 is spectacular in every measurable way! At the top of the block, a big 4-barrel carburetor sips fuel through fresh stainless fluid lines while sucking oxygen through a color-keyed air cleaner. At the base of that carb, a high performance intake hosts a correct points distributor, which sequences fire through MoPar Electronic Suppression cables. At the sides of that intake, restored exhaust manifolds send spent gases in to great-sounding true-dual pipes. Cooling for the big engine is provided by an old school Chrysler radiator, which rides in front of a correct, 7-blade fan. Like the motor itself, the car's Scorch Red engine bay is clean and highly detailed, from its rebuilt wiper motor and tagged MoPar green cap battery to its Chrysler hoses, correct clamps and familiar Chrysler washer tank. And, naturally, the mean mill is authenticated by a correct 2536430 casting number, a November (11), 1st (1), 1968 (68) casting date and a matching partial VIN.

DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION

This GTX definitely has the performance to back up its sinister good looks. Behind the big-bore engine, the car's original A727 3-speed hangs a correct high performance build stamp and matching partial VIN in front of a tough 8.75-inch axle and stout Sure Grip differential. Naturally, the car's front torsion bar and rear leaf suspension has been completely restored to include correct power steering. 2.5-inch aluminized exhaust pipes send spent gases through an H-shaped crossover, polished Pypes Street Pro mufflers and traditional stainless tips. And at the corners of the chassis, factory drums spin behind chrome Magnum 500 wheels and meaty 255/60R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As. The car's restored floors have been sealed in rugged undercoating that'll stand up to dirt and moisture alike. And everything, from this Plymouth's clean stainless fuel tank to its fresh stainless chassis bolts, presents just as well as when it rolled out of the restoration shop.

INTERIOR

According to the Psychology of Color, red is the hue of energy and passion. That being said, it should come as no surprise that this Plymouth's athletic paint borders a correct interior that's dressed in miles of Red vinyl. Front and center, an attractive, wood-trimmed dash hangs old school telemetry above correct 8-track audio. In front of that dash, tight hides wrap a correct bench and bucket combination. At the sides of the car, pliable door panels found correct Scorch Red frames above wood-trimmed armrests. Those panels are sandwiched between a bright headliner and clean carpet, which is protected by color-keyed GTX floor mats. In front of the driver, a monochromatic steering wheel frames a correct lower-half horn ring. And behind the passengers, a fully restored trunk hides a fifth Magnum wheel and fifth Goodrich tire.

Since our sale includes one of this Plymouth's original Broadcast Sheets, there's no questioning the car's highly accurate restoration. Here's a detailed look at how this GTX left Chrysler's St. Louis manufacturing facility.
