Nut and Bolt Restored Mustang Restomod 302ci V8 345hp 4spd Auto A/C Pony Int.
Over the past few years, we've certainly seen some nice resto-mods. But this 1965 Ford Mustang, with its Ford Performance small block and fully documented restoration, is definitely one of the coolest! Fully sorted and ready to hit the road, this awesome classic combines the stump-pulling power of Dearborn's best muscle cars with vintage Detroit style that's classy enough to lead a parade. And today, thanks to a roster of choice upgrades, not only is it an exceptionally comfy place to spend a sightseeing summer, it's also an authentic piece of Americana that'll be welcomed at virtually any car show in any town. If you're looking for a cool muscle car that's as alluring as it is powerful, who says you need a high maintenance original? This awesome pony will look just as cool rolling down the road, show just as well at the local drive-in and provide just as many miles of carefree cruising!
REFRESHINGLY RETRO
The beneficiary of a professional, ground-up restoration that was completed by Hamilton Restorations of Phoenix, Arizona, this well-done classic was subjected to a professional chemical dip that stripped its solid panels all the way to bare metal. That build, conducted during the two years leading up to 2008, championed classic style and world-class workmanship. And then, circa 2016, the car's current owner decided to make a great thing exceptional by queuing a fresh round of awesome Caspian Blue 2-stage. At the front of the car, that striking pigment centers a clean billet grille between modern headlights, retro parking lamps and a tastefully modified bumper. Above that grille, a shaved hood leads polished wipers, which clear factory-tint glass that's tucked under bright vinyl and polished stainless. That stainless perfectly complements a polished mirror, polished door handles, polished fender emblems and textured rocker guards. And at the back of the car, a billet fuel filler floats between retro taillights, retro reverse lamps and a second tasteful bumper.
A 302 OF A DIFFERENT ERA
Hoist this coupe's fully mirrored hood and you'll find 302 cubic inches of Ford Performance V8 that turns strong 9 to 1 compression into a solid 345 horsepower! At the top of the monochromatic mill, a polished and decaled air cleaner funnels wind in to a Holley 4118 carburetor, which siphons fossils through a liquid-filled XRP gauge and polished stainless lines. The resulting air/fuel mixture makes its way from an Edelbrock Performer 289 intake to aluminum GT-40 heads. When those heads flood the cylinders, a Pertronix II distributor sequences fire between a chrome coil and loomed Ford Racing plug wires. Those wires cage an iron block, which employs a cast Ford Performance crank, a Ford Performance E303 cam and a Ford Performance GT-40 valvetrain. Spent gases are jettisoned through coated Doug's Headers. Combustion is cooled through a custom aluminum radiator. Charge is provided by a proven Optima gel cell battery. Construction included a roster of first rate ancillaries, like polished breathers, a polished expansion tank and snazzy Ford Racing valve covers. And overall, the car's massaged engine compartment is clean and exceptionally well done!
PUTTING THE 'MOD' IN RESTO-MOD
At the bottom of this Mustang, Satin Black floors frame a heavily upgraded undercarriage. A StreetFighter AOD 4-speed, sourced directly from TCI Automotive, twists torque to an 8-inch Ford pumpkin that, according to the car's current owner, spins Richmond 3.55 gears. That Satin Black axle rides traditional leaf springs, which have been augmented with boxed traction bars and KYB Gas-a-Just shocks. That clip pushes a Heidts Mustang II front-half, which balances racing-style power rack-and-pinion steering between polished, tubular control arms. That 2-inch lowered suspension is countered by two Baer calipers, two Ford calipers and a quartet of vented discs. The aforementioned headers dump spent gases in to Jet Hot-coated pipes, which align an X-shaped crossover with Jet Hot-coated Flowmaster mufflers. Detail items, like a finned Hughes transmission pan and an electric Mallory fuel pump, elevate the shell far beyond simple turntable fodder. And everything rolls on polished American Racing Torq Thrust IIs, which twist 215/50R17 Goodyear Eagle GTs.
PONY PACKAGE STYLE
Pop the doors and you'll find an attractive 2-tone interior that celebrates the timeless style of Ford's coveted Pony Package. Firm TMI buckets stretch pony-branded covers between plump headrests, enlarged bolsters and 3-point harnesses. In front of those thrones, a sculpted dash frames authentic GT telemetry next to modern air conditioning and a wood-trimmed glovebox that's been signed by former owner Bill Elliot. Below that dash, fade free carpet floats color-keyed floor mats between a small console, a Cruise-O-Matic shifter and plush Pony Package door panels. In front of the driver, a handsome steering wheel spins a thick wood rim and sleek satin spokes around a tilting column. Behind the passengers, a fully restored trunk nests a fifth Torq Thrust wheel inside a fifth Goodyear tire. And modern Custom Autosound audio pumps rhythm through a Rockford Fosgate amp and crisp Pioneer speakers.
