Strike up a conversation with one at a
show and you’ll most likely find that they’ve
been mucking about with old Fords for years,
quite often leaving the scene for a while then
coming back a few years later, and in the
meantime holding onto whatever cars and
parts they’ve amassed along the way.
Nick Manson is no exception. He started
messing around with Fords before he could
even drive (well, legally...), buying up cars and
parts when they were cheap and tucking them
away in various lock-ups around his home
town. This once-ropey Mk2 Cortina is a
classic case in point, having impressively been
in Nick’s ownership since 1986.
“This was actually the first car I bought,”
he recalls. “This was back in 1986 and I was
still learning to drive at the time. I didn’t stay
on the road for long though and once the
MoT ran out it ended up being stored in
various lock-ups, as me and my mates got into
mucking about with Fiat 131s. I never
though to get rid of it though — I guess I’d
become quite attached to the car.”
Fast-forward a decade or so, and Nick
started picking up Classic Ford, and the bug
bit again.
“This was 2007 and I decided it was time
to do something with the car. I dragged it out
of the lock-up expecting the worst, but it
really wasn’t that bad.”
When Nick says it wasn’t that bad, he’s
being slightly economical with the truth...
“OK, when I stripped the car down, I found
it needed strut tops, sills, front panel,
bulkhead sides and rear arches. The panels
and repair sections weren’t as easy to find
back then, but I was able to get the sills and
arches from the late Paul Money at Classic

Sunday, March 1 marked the
inauguration of Ford Space in
Penafiel, a city in the north of
Portugal near Oporto. The space is
dedicated and intended to be used

Ford enthusiasts showed up and had
the chance to enjoy the space. The
set was planned to pay tribute to
Ford cars, specially the racing
division, where two Ford RS200
were present.
The event was honoured with the
presence of several racing drivers
who stood out with Ford vehicles in
different championships: circuit, rally
and cross-country rally. From the
circuit tracks, Joaquim Jorge, Rui

Paulo Alves showed up. From

In 1984 Ford added a turbocharger introduced in the ‘90s. Instead, there are better options to begin with. The American
1.9-litre ‘tall’ block is much stronger, due to additional material
and strengthening at the front of the block. These can be
sleeved back to 1600cc using liners if required, or bored out
to 2000cc.
The other option is a more recent development and uses
the Zetec block. Technically, this engine has since become
known as the ‘ZVH’ and we shall cover it in much greater
depth at a later date, but it basically involves modifying the
Zetec block to accept the CVH head. Again, the result is a
strong bottom end, but as Zetec blocks are readily available
and cheap they are often a more attractive option than
paying £600-upwards for a 1.9 CVH block (And that’s if you
can even find one!). There is one caveat though – only use a
Black Top bottom end as they are much better suited to this
conversion than the earlier Silver Tops.
The reason the capacity is increased is because it’s the
safest way to increase the power of a CVH. You can’t increase
revs because the rocker geometry won’t like it. And
increasing the boost pressures to beyond 2 Bar comes with its
own set of problems. Therefore increasing the displacement
is the only safe way to improve performance.

us are willing to buy a Ford that’s been sat

painting skills, Pete Bowden doesn’t worry about
things like that, just so long as he can source any
missing parts.
“I found this car for sale in late 2013,” explains
Pete. “I’d been looking for an RS Turbo having
owning several in the past and I specifically wanted a
project. This one — a genuine 1986 Series 1 — had
an engine but no interior, it had been sat outside for
between 15 and 18 years and was basically gutted out.
I suspect someone stripped it for restoration and
instead started selling off the parts. I phoned the
seller and he was a really nice guy, I knew it must be
pretty bad since he was describing it honestly. I paid
him £450 then had a mate collect it. Back then even
a nice RS Turbo was only worth about £2500...”
The Escort still had all the glass but was missing a
wing, its interior and bodykit, plus two of the inner
wings were pretty rusty.
“The bonnet had rotted too, but otherwise it
wasn’t as bad as I’d expected. I stored it in my mate’s
barn on his two-poster and it stayed there another six
months until he suggested I start doing something
with it because he wanted his barn back,” laughs
Pete. “So I dragged it home to my one-car garage
and began to bare metal it by hand using wire wool
and sand paper — doing the engine bay alone took a
couple of weeks. The entire restoration, including the
paint, was done in that tiny space.”
The inner wings were cut out, new rear arches
fitted and Pete formed various small repair sections
and welded them in. But it was 24 years since the
last RS Turbo was built and parts were becoming
hard to find. “Fortunately, a lot of the missing bits
came from the Series 1 Turbo Forum — they’re
always especially helpful finding pieces and offering
useful advice too. I also had a few pieces around
from the cars I’d owned previously.”
