Free-French Navy – Free French ships used USN colors 5-H Haze Gray and Deck Blue 20B after refit in the US. Some used Measure 22. Others used Royal Navy

I do not have any definitive information on the paint used by the Soviet navy. From scattered sources it appears they used several shades of gray. One source says
Soviet ships were switched from a light gray to a medium gray sometime between 1941 to 1945. Note the waterlines were usually painted white. On wood decks I use
Iraqi Sand (819) followed by a Brown Sand (876) + Beige Red (804) 1:1 wash.

Colors for Wood Decking**

Weather Beaten Grayish Deck Tan 986 Deck Tan This is the standard for wood decks. Despite the
name, this is rather gray. I like to mix in a little Iraqi
Sand (819) (10:1). Then lightly wash with small
streaks of 986 plus a little 919 in the direction of the
planking.
Light Tan 821 + 919 German Beige Camo + Foundation IJN 'deck tan.' For a light tan wood deck.
White
Yellowish Light Tan 917 Beige Light cypress color of Yamato, Musashi
Orangey Tan - (matches Testor's 'Deck Tan') 860 Medium Flesh Tone A very 'bright' tan. It could work as a base for a
brown wash.
Medium Brown to use as a wash 874 U.S.A. Tan Earth Use in a wash or dry brush over a light tan to give a
wood 'grain' look
Medium-Dark Brown to use as a wash 983 Flat Earth Use in a wash or dry brush over a light tan to give a
wood 'grain' look
Yellowish tan for IJN to use as wash 977 + 976 Desert yellow + Brown Sand Use as a wash for IJN wood decks

* GC = Game Color, PA = Panzer Aces. Note: All Model Color numbers start with '70' as in '70990' for light grey. Game Color numbers start with '72' as in 72047 for
Wolf gray.
** I have yet to find a 'perfect' color scheme for wooden decking on a miniature. But these are the best colors I have found so far. You should experiment for a 'look'
that pleases you.

For a “mahogany” look wooden deck scheme I use a base coat of Iraqi Sand (819) followed by a wash of Desert Yellow (977). For the wash use a very fine brush and
make very short strokes in the direction of the planking. Then do the same thing with a wash of Brown Sand (876) again with very short strokes. For the Soviets I use
Brown Sand (876) + Beige Red (804) 1:1 for the final wash.
