We also like the Sonic's turbocharged engine, which is standard this year. It makes a respectable 138 horsepower and a gutsy 148 pound-feet of torque. This torque makes the Sonic responsive and increases the fun-factor.
The 2019 Sonic is a good subcompact car that does most things well. Passenger space and comfort is excellent in both rows, and there’s lots of cargo room.
The 2019 Sonic comes standard with the previously optional turbocharged 1.4-liter inline-four; the former base, a naturally aspirated 1.8-liter, is no longer available (and it won't be missed). Paired with the optional six-speed automatic transmission, this little turbo mill motivates the Sonic around town without drama.
Among subcompacts, the Sonic feels almost grown-up. It's reasonably quiet and has a relatively comfortable ride compared to its peers in this spartan class.
Although it's compact on the outside, the 2019 Sonic offers a roomy interior constructed of high-quality materials and some of the most comfortable front seats we've tested in a subcompact car. There are lots of little goodies, such as an available power driver's seat, MyLink audio and a heated steering wheel, that one wouldn't expect from this type of vehicle.
The Sonic rides well, and road noise is well-managed. The front seats are comfortable, and we like the car's storage features, too.
As far as subcompacts go, the Sonic is fun to drive, with a sturdy quality about it and well-controlled ride. Chevy also gets points for a responsive steering unit with good weighting and feel unlike many of its lighter-feeling competitors.
Today’s subcompact cars have come a long way from the cheap-feeling underpowered “econoboxes” of yore, and the Sonic is a great case in point. It boasts a solid, high-quality feel, is fun to drive, and offers many unexpected features.
In both handling capabilities and well-controlled ride quality, Sonics score a bit above average. There’s a sturdy quality about the Sonic, and it’s responsive, too. The steering is well-weighted, with a satisfying feel.
The Chevy Sonic brings a lot to the table, including things you might not expect in the subcompact class, like plenty of passenger and cargo room and a standard touch-screen infotainment system.
The Sonic is a small car that’s bigger inside than you’d expect — and now under the hood, too.
The Sonic delivers impressive features and styling on a budget, making it a top choice for entry-level buyers.
