Although Chevy discontinued the Krypton Green and Brimstone exterior paint colors for 2018, Sonic drivers can now choose the new Ivy Metallic shade. The Krypton Green appearance package, which featured special wheels and emblems, is also no longer available. Last year, the base model of the Sonic came with a simple stereo and USB port; for 2018, the 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system is standard equipment across the lineup.

The Various Trims of the 2018 Chevy Sonic

The Sonic is available in three different trims and as either a sedan or hatchback. The base LS trim comes only as a sedan and includes power door locks, keyless entry, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, a four-speaker stereo with USB port, and a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot with 4G LTE internet. The LT trim is available in both body styles and comes with an upgraded engine as well as power windows, upgraded cloth upholstery, an additional USB port, cruise control, and a six-speaker stereo satellite radio.

The Premier trim also comes in both body styles and is equipped with the upgraded powertrain. It includes faux leather upholstery, heated power-adjustable front seats, leather-trimmed steering wheel, sport-tuned suspension, and proximity key with push-button start.

Sonic drivers can choose between two engines: a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine and a five-speed manual transmission, or the turbo-four with six-speed manual in the LT and Premier trims. Both provide 138 horsepower and can be upgraded with a six-speed automatic transmission. You'll get an EPA-estimated 26/35 city/highway miles per gallon with the base engine and 28/37 with the turbo-four. Choose the Premier trim with its upgraded suspension if you prefer a sportier driving experience.

Safety, Personified

The 2018 Sonic has earned a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration and Top Safety Pick designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Every Sonic model is equipped with a rearview camera, and the vehicle can be upgraded with advanced driver assistance systems that include forward collision alert, rear parking sensors, and lane departure warning.
