Chevrolet dubbed its second all-new, postwar trucks the Task Force line when they debuted midway through the 1955 model year. Blurring the lines between working machines and passenger cars, these trucks featured wraparound windshields, 12-volt electrics, and a fresh and abundant serving of chrome.
This half-ton 1959 Chevrolet Apache 3100 stepside pickup, comes from the final year of Task Force production. Chevrolet added the Apache name to its light-duty trucks for 1958. With a restoration completed in 2019, including a remarkably detailed engine bay, this example features the original 235-cubic-inch Thriftmaster straight-six and three-speed manual it was assembled with in 1959. This Apache still wears most of its factory-original sheet metal which was treated to an impressive finish during the redo.
This truck has had test miles only since it's restoration; this is a brand new truck that has not even been broken in yet.
The fully rebuilt 235-cubic-inch straight-six engine in this Apache is original to the truck. It has a compression ratio of 8.5:1, its fuel is supplied by a single Rochester carburetor, with a rated output of 135 horsepower. No leaks are reported from anywhere associated with the drivetrain. The GM manual transmission has three forward speeds shifts smoothly in all gears. The Chevrolet Thriftmaster six, as the light-duty 235 was then called, is restored to a very high standard cosmetically, with correct finishes and fasteners on the engine. The rest of the engine bay is equally sanitary and fresh.
This Apache was refinished in 2019 in Robin Egg Blue, a color scheme that extends to the engine bay. The paint is still in perfect condition, with no swirls or blemishes.
Every item on the exterior of the truck, including the bumpers and all badges and trim, have been either restored or replaced. The present chrome work presents as being in excellent condition. The cargo bed has new oak flooring planks with polished retaining hardware. The tailgate has new brackets, chains and black protective material. All of the cab glass was replaced during the restoration, and the exterior lighting is fully functional. The undercarriage, including the frame rails, crossmembers and rear axle, presents as nearly spotless.
Every item and component in the interior has been either restored or replaced. The cab's bench seat is now covered with factory upholstery that complements the Apache's exterior paint scheme. The cab's rubber floor mat is new, as is the headliner, which includes a working dome light. The body-color steel dashboard presents as being in excellent condition. All small controls look to be as new. The chrome-trimmed instrument nacelle also looks to be in very good condition. The cab's seals and weatherstripping were replaced with new items at the time of the restoration.
This Apache rides on correct steel wheels with wide whitewall tires that are in as-new condition, mounted on 15-inch steel disc wheels that are said to be in perfect condition. Topping the wheels are small year-correct wheel covers in excellent shape. A variety of major suspension components were replaced during the restoration. No issues with either the manual steering or manual drum brakes. The shock absorbers and chassis bushings are in excellent condition.
