How Has the Silverado 1500 Changed Over the Years?

Since the year 1999, the design evolution of the Silverado 1500 has gone through four separate renditions. The Silverado is currently in its fourth generation, a milestone the model reached in 2019. Each generation of the Silverado 1500 lasts anywhere from four to eight years before the newest before the next is ushered in, reaching new technological heights and ushering in fresh cosmetic designs. Let’s take a look at each generation and how it made its mark on the design evolution of the Silverado 1500.

First Generation (1999-2007)

The Silverado 1500 kicked off its official maiden voyage in August of 1998, at the perfect time to release a model for the 1999 model year. Available in regular cab, extended cab, and crew cab, the original Silverado 1500 had three engine pairings. A 4.3-liter V6, a small-block 4.8-liter V8, and a 5.3-liter V8 were offered to Puyallup drivers. During this same timeframe, Chevrolet also launched its Colorado, and would later offer two additional versions of the Silverado: The SS, and the Silverado Hybrid. The latter, released in 2004, was the industry’s first hybrid pickup truck. While this generation lacked the chiseled build and defined lines that the Silverado is now famous for, it was still a design well ahead of its time.

Second Generation (2007-2013)

The sophomore offering of the Silverado came in time for the 2007 model year, and the GMC900 was put on display for Tacoma and Auburn drivers. This redesigned Silverado came with a more sophisticated exterior, upgraded underpinnings, and bigger and better engines. This version of the Silverado continued to surge in the sales category and was put on a pedestal by automotive critics. Upgraded powertrain choices meant better performance and the V8 included an “Active Fuel Management” function that switched half of the cylinders off under delicate driving conditions. 2009 releases included the 6.2-liter V8, and since 2008 the model offered automatic transmissions exclusively.

Third Generation (2014-2018)

The transition from the second to third generation included the most prominent technology and infotainment upgrades thanks to the new platform. The GMT900 was phased out to make way for the new K2XX, giving the Silverado its current trademark fully boxed steel frame. These super-enhanced Silverado 1500 models operated smoother and quieter than ever before, giving the model its official entry into the premium truck category thanks to the High Country trim. This configuration featured saddle brown leather throughout the cabin, in addition to other high-end offerings. In 2015, an upgraded 8-speed transmission offered smoother shifting and faster acceleration, propelling the Silverado to another level mechanically.

Fourth Generation (2019-Present)

The fourth and current generation Silverado was unveiled just in time for the 100th anniversary of Chevy’s first truck offering in 1918. One of the staple trims was the Trail Boss, a rugged off-road version of the Silverado that came factory-built with a unique 4×4 system sporting a 2-inch lift and a Z71 off-road package. This fourth installment included a robust offering of six engines, including a 2.7-liter inline turbo 4-cylinder and several fuel-burning V8s.
