Peugeot 205 GTi 1.9

Auction Result - Highest bid was $25,000 but substantial interest after auction @ higher prices - the owner decided to keep it for all the reasons we liked the car !

1988 Peugeot 205 GTi - from Car Magazine "The Good, the Bad and The Ugly" summary sections back in the day

For: Best looking Super-mini, entertaining chassis

Against: Heavy Steering

Sum Up: This is how it should be done

- AUD $29,500 when new; 127mph (!); 7.5s 0-100kph

It was the little family car that morphed into arguably the best hot hatch of the golden era of pocket rockets. It was declared "car of the decade" by CAR Magazine in 1990.

Peugeot – the maker of dependable and comfortable sedans such as the 504 that are probably still running around Africa as taxis – turned up in 1984 with Pininfarina stunner which still looks great today and offers an unparalleled driving experience

What was special, was the way that power was delivered, the phenomenal road holding, and the go-kart-like steering.

As the ‘80s wore on, the hot hatch arms race intensified, and Peugeot reacted with a beefed-up, big valve 1.9-litre, 130bhp engine, which joined rather than replaced the 1.6.

Differences included half leather seats, disc brakes all round, larger, 15in diameter, wheels, thicker anti-roll bars, and revised spring and damper rates.

They remain icons of the era and are being seen more favorably now than ever as a car that created a whole new segment for enthusiasts and lauded for their purity of design and driving experience.

Peugeot 205 GTi Hatch in excellent condition - if you are going to own one the late series 1.9 with the bigger wheels is, without doubt, the one to buy.

WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY

Interesting there is a very similar example for sale in the UK (where cars are traditionally much cheaper than in Australia) - the winning bid was GBP17,250 or close to $32,000 - view it here www.collectingcars.com and we would not be surprised if UK buyers show interest in the this Australian example

CAR Magazine - A True 1980's game-changer

"Today, it’s rightfully celebrated as a classic, and Peugeot is right to trumpet the 205’s achievements. But more than that, the 205 was the true 1980s gamechanger – as it predicted a move to larger, more sophisticated superminis."
