The Twin Cites VW Club had a burger run to a neat little drive in burger joint in Delano, MN, Peppermint Twist.
It was great to get out and see other VW enthusiasts, everyone was pretty good about social distancing!
We had 10 to 12 members show up with their cars. Even picked up a new member while we were there!
I don't know about everyone else but the nose of the Ghia sure does collect bugs!! _________________ 1957 Oval Window Beetle

The Twin Cities VW Club did a little cruise Saturday before our Bug In car show.
I like this rear view mirror shot.
There were a few more cars in front of me.
Here we all are at the Oktoberfest in Delano, MN

Thanks Marc,
I do get a lot of nice comments on it. The top and whitewalls seem to make the Zambezi Green just Pop!

Tires are on my soon to purchase list. What brand are your tires? Does anybody sell these besides Coker? _________________ Marc

Coker was the only place I found them... they are expensive!
Close to $1k with shipping and everything...... |
That's all I have found also. Yes, pretty pricy for what use to be a very basic tire! _________________ Marc

More snow here in Minnesota, and my shoulder is doing pretty good after surgery so I thought I would do a few projects in the garage.
I had ordered a Blaze Cut for the Ghia a while back, so I figured I would get it put in..
Man what a hassle to find a spot that would not hit the deck cover or pinch the tube.
Ugly as it can be...
Hopefully I have it secure enough not to rub and it stays cool enough not to go off just from the engine heat... if it does. that's a quick $200 down the drain. I figure as much time and money as I put into it I should try everything I can to protect it. I'll still have my 5# Halon bottle behind the seat.
Then I decided to finally remove the flimsy aluminum trim that kept falling off and install the ISP stainless steel that I bought. I used the NAPA side molding clips with a little modification. I wrapped the bolts with a little bit of butyl rubber and used stainless steel washers and lock nuts on the inside. I then sprayed over them with some body cavity wax. Shouldn't be any moisture coming in those bad boys!
I'm happy with it!
My wife had said the car was too noisy to ride in... so I added another layer of Dynamat and topped that off with some 1/2 foam and put the carpet back on the.. I'll have to wait for spring to see how it did!
I also greased the front end, changed the oil and installed new ceramic pucks in the disk brakes up front.
Enough for one weekend!

Correct. I did not use the trim screw mounts on the lower front door trim, the rearmost holes on the back pieces, or the rear holes on the front piece (I didn't want to pull the mud seal out on those). The stainless snapped on to the plastic clips pretty good. With the bolts holding it, it's not going anywhere! _________________ 1957 Oval Window Beetle

Since the Ghia is laid up for the winter, I thought I would fix a nagging issue I have with her. You cam smell a little exhaust when you turn the heat on. I believe I found the reason!
Leaking exhaust where the muffler clamps on.
1st step is to get the heat exchanger off.
Once it's off, you can see where the stub has rusted/eroded away.
1st step is to cut away the old stub, I used a sawzall
Then I used a sidegrinder to clean it up, and a die grinder to clean out the inside a little.
Next is to drive in the stub repair piece, it's a very tight fit. I ended up dropping the exchanger a few times on a piece of plate steel to drive it in place.
I welded one side, but I'm not that good of a welder, I used some high temperature silicone on the other side.. It's supposed to be good to 650 degrees. As tight of a fit as they are, I don't think it will fall out. If it leaks, it's a simple thing to get it off and weld it.
All that's left is to reinstall them!
Before I do that, I'll adjust the valves and the thermostat setting since they are very easy to get to now! _________________ 1957 Oval Window Beetle
