Just picked up a 66 convertible 156763xxx that has the L54 paint code. I thought this was a 67 paint color? Oh well...it looks cool. |

L 54 Poppy red is a CONVERTIBLE only color offered from WAY back... Not sure when it started..
Here it is shown in 1965... but shows an actual 64 and older car...
But then again it labels the body as Ruby..
Silly Germans... NINE... No proof reading required..

Indeed peculiar, mostly in that the charts here on TS are quite sparse with respect to convertible colors.
I too finally brought Poppy home last night, a 66 convertible, and all this time (over a year) that I've been waiting to take delivery of it, I assumed she was Ruby. Why? Well, because the Samba charts don't list Poppy for 66. They do start mentioning Poppy for the 67 model year, for verts only. But so many, many years prior that, convertible-only colors are only sparsely mentioned in the charts. If it weren't for the barely-still-legible mohn rot L54 label, I never woulda believed it.
Anyway, I do also have a VIN question that I'm hoping Ken can clarify, but it's of much less significance now that I found this thread and confirmed my suspicions.
And, for what it's worth, Poppy won't be red for TOO much longer, I'm just not a red kinda guy, so she will be transitioning to some shade of blue as time passes. But, she will still be called Poppy. Now THAT's peculiar, WTF am I doing naming a car and giving it a gender???? Oh. Well, I guess it's not so much of a name as a reference designator so friends know which one of the fleet I'm referring to.
In any case, she's glad to be wakened from her 24 year slumber and will see asphalt passing beneath her soon
