With just 8,200 cars built over two years and a handful road registered in the UK, this rare classic car has amazed motorists.

The car is distinctive with its retractable doors and is a collector's item for BMW and classic car admirers.

According to the Technik department, the retractable doors were designed to make "accessing the vehicle easier and deliver a unique driving experience".

The BMW Z1 bought at the auction for £42,000 was originally registered in Belgium in the early 1990s.

Once imported to the UK in 2003 the BMW Z1 had only two owners, with the previous owner driving it for just one year before carefully dry storing it to preserve the condition.

The car was recommissioned for £4,500 and was fitted with new tyres and cambelt change and was sold with a fresh 12-month advisory free MOT.

Upgrades were also made to the BMW's power steering, pedals, steering wheel and gear knob among other newly fitted accessories,

The car was described as being "a handsomely designed sports car" with its bright red paintwork leaning into its flashy design.

But the retractable doors are the stand-out feature of this car and are what separates it from other classic motors.

With just 200kms of mileage since 2012 the unique BMW was said to have little signs of ageing both in and outside the car making it a super acquisition,

The BMW Z1 comes with 168 horsepower and a top speed of 140mph.

Going from 0 to 60mph in 7.9 seconds accelerating with the doors down will offer this lucky motorist an incredibly fun and unique experience.

Another perfectly preserved classic motor with low mileage has been touted by auto experts as "stepping into a 1986 Ford showroom".

And one lucky man took home a BMW motor for just £15 after it was found abandoned behind a restaurant.

In addition to the unique doors, the Z1 also has a removable plastic body panels and a roll hoop integrated into the windscreen
