Mondeo man used to be mocked as boring and uninspired. A middle-of-the-road “Mr Average” who probably voted Tory but did not mind Tony Blair and almost certainly owned a labrador.

However, anyone who has remained loyal and true to Ford’s mid-Noughties family saloon is now having the last laugh because it is rocketing in value.

Along with other unexceptional cars of this era, such as the Vauxhall Astra and Renault Megane, Mondeos are undergoing a revival in demand amid a growing trend for nostalgia among drivers.

Research published by Auto Trader shows that the average value of a 2004 Ford Mondeo has increased nearly 50 per cent since before the pandemic.

In 2019, the average Mondeo listed on the car-selling website sold for only £1,544
