Used Car of the Day: 2008 Saab 9-3 Aero

It's been a minute since I've seen a Saab in our forums. This 2008 Saab 9-3 Aero caught my eye, though.

Front-wheel drive, V6, automatic, and no rust. Well-maintained, so says the seller. Oh, and paid off.

This Missouri-based car does have at least one dent, however.

There are over 152,000 miles on the clock.

If this sort of thing interests you -- and I bet there are more than a few Saab people in our readership -- click here to see it.

Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

I remember when Saab bit the dust. Out of curiosity I went to.a nearby Saab dealer's website and discovered he marked all of his remaining inventory "Used, no factory warranty." But he did not mark down the price below sticker. I assume he finally got rid of them all, but I would never buy a new car with no warranty.

If you've only got 5k to spend on transportation, I cannot imagine a worse way to spend it than on a GM orphan from Sweden that's 15 years old with 150k on the clock and limited plus expensive parts availability and dwindling techs who'd even want to work on it. Go find a similar vintage Camry or Accord with 150k miles or even a Ford or a Chevy, whatever. Hell, even an old Jaguar is less of a crapshoot than a Saab. At least you can still get parts.

You know how I know you don't own a Saab? Because the parts availability stuff is no big deal at all unless you are dealing with the ng95. I have a 9-3 and 9-5 OG And the aftermarket support. It's very robust. There is also a fair amount of support that comes and goes from the remnants of Orio. So no one should really worry about that sort of thing.

  • 1995 SC In the realm of bad things that can happen to a 10th Gen Thunderbird, the subject car of this article got off easy. This was a kit back in the day and a suprising number still pop up:
  • 28-Cars-Later I'm not dead, I'm getting better.
  • Jalop1991 GTI all the things--because the Germans do it better. But it'll never happen.Instead, this will turn into all trim options, like VW's "R-line" and Hyundai's "N-line". Lipstick on a pig.
  • Bd2 No match for N by Hyundai, the most glorious letter in the performance Alphabet.
  • 28-Cars-Later Of course they will, its just a trim. At the core its a stupid idea but if it turns a buck it would be foolish to not implement. "Certainly, a precedent exists here with the likes of BMW and Mercedes long having offered hot variants of crossovers such as the X6 M and AMG-ized GLwhatever." Who I point and laugh at as often as I can. I have a friend with an actual G-Klasse (V12 no less), that's a Mercedes. Your 'Bama special ML err GL really isn't and never will be. It may rob you like a Mercedes in and out of warranty but it lacks the panache and prestige of one, just a step above K.I.A. on the Karen scale of fakeness.
