The luxury sport sedan market is full of worthy contenders of all different price ranges and engine types. It is one of the most fun to review because most have topnotch tech and powerful engines. The Genesis brand is new to the stable of contenders as they have recently separated themselves from Hyundai to a standalone luxury brand. This week, we will kick the tires on the drop-dead-gorgeous Genesis G80 Sport.

Under the hood is a 3.3-LITER twin turbo GDI engine, producing 365 horsepower mated to an 8-speed automatic and HITRAC all-wheel drive. Power from the twin turbo is linear and powerful. Getting to highway speed is effortless and smooth. I don’t use the paddle shifters too often, but the shifts are quick and crisp, especially when Sport mode is called upon. If the weather gets iffy, the all-wheel-drive will supply some confidence on wet or snowy roads.

Exterior styling on the SPORT is where this car sets itself apart. With aggressive angles and a combination of black and bronze accents, this car looks like it means business. The wheels at each corner are reminiscent of track style wheels, and with quad exhaust tips out back, you know something special lurks under the hood. When the car is freshly washed, the Caspian black paint job has an extreme shine and sparkle that is captivating. LED lights all around also set this car apart in a line of regular vehicles.

Slide into the driver’s seat, and you’ll be surrounded by a special interior. Carbon fiber accents work well with soft leather and rubber surfaces that is indeed a nice place to spend time. Not quite at the level of Mercedes or Audi, the G80 is a wonderfully executed sedan with real feel and performance. Buttons and switches are simple to use and intuitive. Rear-seat legroom is above average and will easily carry two adults or car seats. The trunk is also a large enough to carry golf bags, sports equipment or a few large suitcases.

On road, the G80 is smooth and stable. It feels a little heavy, but in a good way. Stopping power is adequate and it handles corners without too much drama. It will take a couple OF days to really master how the body rolls into curves, but it is a ton of fun to drive spirited. Acceleration is satisfying and doesn’t take much to reach highway speed. Highway commutes are quiet and superb.

The G80 deserves a serious look because it is just below the performance and comfort of a Mercedes at a fraction of the cost.

Genesis claims 20 mpg average, and I was able to manage 22 mpg during my road test. MSRP for the G80 Sport is $58,725.
