After nearly 40 years of production the Mercedes-Benz G-Class is getting a makeover in 2018, and the automaker is sending the current body style off in style.
As it retires its longest-running production model in history (the first G model launched in 1979), Mercedes-Benz is allotting the United States 100 G550s; 463 of the limited-edition models are being produced for the global market. They are expected to reach dealers in March or April of next year, but pricing is not yet confirmed.
What we do know is that the G550 Limited Edition will come in "platinum magno" black finish with a white-stitched black leather interior, along with optional chrome and sports packages.
Standard equipment will include a Harman Kardon Logic 7 surround sound system, TV tuner, heated windscreen, Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC adaptive cruise control, Blind Spot Assist, and heat-insulating dark-tinted glass for rear side windows and rear window,.
Another limited-edition model, the G 65 Final Edition, will salute the discontinuation of the V-12 Mercedes-AMG G 65.
Of the 65 versions being produced worldwide, the U.S. will get 30. Expect to pay for the privilege of claiming one of those models though; the price will be $252,690, almost $29,000 more than a standard 2018 G65.
Of course, the Final Edition comes loaded with extra bronze trim on the mirrors, bumpers, spare-tire cover, and grill. The 21-inch, 10-spoke wheels are also finished in matte bronze. Inside, there's carbon-fiber trim everywhere, and the "designo black" nappa leather has light brown contrast stitching. Also standard: the twin-turbo 6.0-liter V-12 engine with 621 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque.
Allocation has not yet been decided, but select dealers will begin to take orders soon, according to a company spokesperson. While the top markets for the G-Class in the United States are Southern California, Texas, South Florida, the New York tri-state area, and Atlanta, other markets will likely be included in the allocation.
Mercedes-Benz is clearly doubling down on the V-12 offering; by the end of 2017 the auto company will offer six 12-cylinder models including the S65 Sedan, Coupe and Convertible, SL, G, and Maybach.
As they say, go big or go home.
