Introduction

Jacob Boodrie
Professional Consigner

As a car designed to rival not just the all-conquering Porsche 911, but contemporary Ferraris too, the NSX was one of the most exciting models to ever leave the Honda factory.

When Honda unveiled its new car in the late 80's, it really was a world’s first. The mass-produced, all-aluminium car, powered by a 3.0 L V6, featured Honda's VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) system famed for its top end redline and unmistakeable engine sound. The origins of the NSX trace back to 1984, with the Italian car styling house Pininfarina helping sculpt the HP-X (Honda 'Pininfarina' eXperimental) concept car. The car evolved to its name change of 'NS-X' which stood for 'New', 'Sportscar' 'eXperimental', and finally launched as the NSX. Built in a purpose-made factory in Japan and then showcased at the 1989 Tokyo motor show, the NSX launched to the public the following year and went on sale in the UK in January 1991 receiving positive reviews.

This NSX (NA1) model, one of the first to market, comes from ~1 year and 10 months ownership and has a long and low ownership beforehand too. It is in beautiful condition, testament to the long ownership in the original family hands, and the previous ~13 years as a showpiece for the original Honda dealer that sold the car. Not only this, but a wealth of provenance comes with the car where upkeep has been provided direct from the original Honda dealer, the car still wearing the original "NSX" registration number it came with, it is well worth a good look if you're in the market for one of these.

This listing was written from information supplied by Jacob after meeting Steve the owner, and having visited and photographed the vehicle.

Meet the owner

In my opinion, these are one of the most beautiful cars ever designed.

As a fan of unique and rare cars, the Honda quickly caught Steves eye, particularly the long family ownership and surprising and not often heard sale back to the supplying dealer ~18 years later. He also tells us "The Ayrton Senna development back story through his connection via F1 really fascinated me, I had to find out more about the car and then own one!". A UK spec and supplied car, it has been serviced by the supplying dealer Crown Honda all of its life "For me the build quality and design is simply fantastic. The car was pretty much perfect when purchased and in my mind, still remains so".

Steven has around 26 vehicles, and so is selling a few to slim down his collection, he lets us know that "The NSX simply doesn't get used enough, I have more cars being restored at the minute and just won't have the room when they are finished". He will be happy to answer any questions about the car in the comments section below.

Exterior

A sporty classic with race inspired looks, this was Honda’s answer to the Ferrari and Lamborghini supercars of the 90's era.

Wheels and Tyres

The Honda is equipped with 5 spoke alloy 15" wheels to the front and 16" wheels to the rear, the staggered approach providing additional grip and acceleration. The alloys show really well around all four corners of the car and we didn't note any major defects if any at all.

Complete with a set of Yokohama A539 tyres with a spec of 205/50 showing date codes of 2003 to the front, and to the rear, Yokohama 225/50 Advanced Sport with date codes of 2014. The condition of tyres looks good overall with no obvious cracking or major wear, there was a tyre advisory at the last MOT which Steve has said he will get rectified should the winning bidder wish. Please take a look at the photos and videos for a detailed view of the exterior of this NSX and a closer look at the wheels and tyres.

Bodywork

The car stands straight, shut lines look good and we could see no visible distortion to the panels. Both doors and both boot sections open and close well, exactly as you would expect from the build quality on show here. We didn't spot any corrosion on the panels, this is a car that has been well pampered and cared for all of its life.

We've highlighted in more detail our observations through our hi-resolution images and videos, so please take time to look through all the media files for a detailed view at what’s on offer, and for you to assess the condition of the car for yourselves.

Paint

Finished in a smart coat of "Berlina Black", it really suits this car and gives it a totally different presence to the white and red equivalents. If we were being really picky, it could benefit from a good detailing just to remove some of the swirl marks commonly found on black paint. There was a little sign of stone chipping to the front bumper and a couple of small marks on the lower bumper also, less than you'd anticipate for a car that's covered ~104,800 miles.

Again, we have taken high resolution images and videos of the car for you to assess the condition of the bodywork for yourselves. The images are taken from a few different angles to show off the car as you would see it if you were standing there for yourselves. So please take the time to fully assess these high resolution images and videos of the car, for you to make up your own minds about the condition of the paint.

Glass and Trim

Windscreen section, side windows and mirrors all appear in good condition and we could see no sign of scratching or chips on the main glass sections. We noted that the windscreen has its, likely original, Honda etched glass still in place which was great to see.

We did note a small crack on the front offside indicator cover, the current owner let us know that this has been present on the car since his initial ownership, however he does have a brand new indicator assembly, just not been fitted (photo in paperwork section). The seals look good around the exterior and in line with the rest of the condition of the car. Considering this car has been a showpiece for a large part of its life, the quality and the condition is still clearly evident here even after ~32 years.

Interior

The classic 1990's Japanese design of the NSX interior is well put together in the cabin area, and with its black on black finish, the look and feel is really smart.

Seats and Carpets

The well-padded and deep bolstered sports seats appear in great condition and hard to believe the car is over 30 years old and over 100,000 covered when the seats look as good as they do. We noted no major concerns or rips, tears or issue on the seats. A very comfortable place to take in the road ahead from.

Likewise with the carpets, these appear in good condition too, unfaded and have been protected by mats. Please have a look through the interior gallery for a closer look of the condition of the seats and carpets for yourself.

Dashboard

The sleek black dash appears in great shape with no marks or scratches to report. Mileage counter showed with ~104,825 miles at the time of our visit. All dials and gauges are fully functional, showing well and without concern with no obvious scratching to the facings across the drivers section. Door cards showed nicely on the car and gave a great impression looking around the NSX as did the trim of the roof interior which was finished in a soft leather.

We noted no issues with any warning lights and the fuel read, speedometer and rev counter were all working with no problems observed. The red on black dial needles give a great race inspired look to the dash area which we noted as a highlight here. Our interior gallery section takes you over some closer images of the NSX's dash area, head over and see the car's cabin in finer detail.

Steering Wheel / Gear Stick

The Honda branded steering wheel looks good in its appearance with little wear to this looking over the steering grip. With its black leather finish, the overview is really smart and inviting. The setup includes cruise control functions to aid the driver, especially on long journeys.

The automatic gear selector showed well in a smart black finish without major scratching, there was a slight mark next to the gearstick but nothing too concerning. As well as being able to select 'Drive' in an automatic gear setting, there is an option to override this into gear should this be needed. We've captured high-resolution photos for you to review and appreciate the condition of the interior in our gallery section.

Mechanics

A car that really thrives on revs and excitement, packing a 3.0L V6 Honda V-Tec in the rear, this mid-engined sports car is all about the drive.

Engine and Gearbox

The superb high-revving 3.0L VTEC power plant is undoubtedly the reason why this car is so impressive, it truly has to be driven to be understood. Powered by an engine with ~260BHP, its good enough for a 0-62MPH time of ~7.3 seconds and a top speed of ~170MPH, its some seriously quick performance that comes out of this mid-engined automatic from the 90s. We noted no issues on the start up of the car with the engine and exhaust running smoothly when we visited. As to be expected from a car of this quality, the engine produced some lovely sounds when out on the road driving very well and providing a powerful drive on the journey out.

Take a look at the Honda's engine section which we've highlighted in the cold start section of the mechanical review video. We take the car on a short drive and go into further detail about the Honda, taking it out on some local roads to get a better sense of what this car is all about, the car engaging the gears without issue.

Suspension and Brakes

On the drive out, Steven took us around some local roads, we heard no knocks, bangs or squeaks from the suspension and overall the car performed as to be expected with no observed issues. Ultimately the set up is quite sporty, but still offers everyday practicality and both driver and passenger comfort in its ride style.

The brakes felt to have no pull or vibrations that stood out to us when on the journey and brought the car to a stop well without a problem. We cover off the underside of the Honda's exterior in our Mechanical gallery section. Head over to our video section where we've summarised our visit in more detail for you to view for yourself.

The Drive

Honda’s iconic mid-engined modern classic was widely praised for its balanced handling, impressive performance and genuine everyday usability. This shapely Honda begs to be driven on its new owner’s favourite winding roads and give a great experience in all its driving future ahead.

The NSX is truly a powerhouse and able to deliver on demand, but also offers a refined drive capable of delivering long distances without concern and with plenty of driver support. The current owner describes the NSX as, "An effortless long-distance tourer with exceptional handling and balance." Head over to the on the road video to hear our thoughts on the journey and to see how the car performs.

Electrics and Other

The NSX is complete with air-conditioning, leather trim, cruise control, power windows, seats and mirrors and a stereo sound system. An additional upgrade is the Thatcham Category One security system installed in 2004 by Honda in Hertfordshire.

Steve let us know that he has had no issues with the electrical elements on the car and to the best of his knowledge, everything was working as it should do.

History and Paperwork

A UK supplied NA1 car that has been pampered through it's life, coming to market from ~1 year ownership, ~13 years prior to that being a showpiece for the original supplying dealership, what a story.

A UK spec and supplied car, this Honda NSX includes its factory specced NSX Europe Touring maps, NSX brochure, NSX dealer VHS tape and NSX binoculars. The car has had very few real owners over its time, it is more like a 1 former keeper car but the registration is a bit different. It was in family ownership for the first ~18 years, the car changed hands from husband to wife, and then was sold back to the original supplying dealership who registered it in their name and kept it as a showpiece. At this stage it was 2 former keeper car, the dealership keeping it for some ~13 years. They then had a failed sale on finance adding another owner, and so it has 4 former keepers logged now at time of sale.

The car comes with a whole host of provenance in terms of the original book pack, invoices from Crown Honda, and it is sold with its original registered "NSX" registration number. The Thatcham alarm was installed in October 2004 by Crown Honda. Servicing was carried out by Crown Honda in January 2015, February 2010, February 2008, August 1999, August 1994, February 1992 and September 1991. A new timing belt was installed in February 2007.

Should there be any questions required, Steven would be happy to answer these in the section below.
