For 2006, Subaru broadened and enhanced the Outback line, its the company's best-selling all-wheel drive vehicle. Its aggressive body lines and raised ride height, paired with 8.7 inches of ground clearance and four-wheel drive, make it well suited to rough terrain. The Outback is also better able to stand up to the rigors of winter travel. The symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system in the Outback is a unique traction control system that automatically distributes engine power to all four tires during cornering. In addition, it can monitor wheel slippage and automatically send additional torque to the rear wheels if needed. The Outback's front seats are standard equipment with side impact air bags and seat-mounted side curtain air bags, while active front head restraints help reduce whiplash in rear-end collisions. The Outback has earned the highest "5-star" rating in crash tests by the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
