The 1975 vintage was a mixed vintage for the majority of the wine world but the real winners were 1975 whites. Champagne had a great year along with Sauternes and the aromatic white wine regions of Alsace.

Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:

  • Palmer port 1975 Single Harvest Tawny Port
  • Ryst Dupeyron Armagnac Reserve Joseph Millesime
  • Barolo 1975 Valfieri
  • Chateau Coutet 1975 Barsac Premier Cru Classe
  • Cognac 1975 Grande Champagne Cognac
  • Cossart Gordon Maderira 1975 Vintage Verdelho Madeira

Bordeaux: The summer months were hot and, initially, dry. Despite storms in August, good weather was restored through September and October, permitting the harvest to go on uninfluenced by rain. The wines on release were incredibly tannic yet were intensely fruity and rich. This has mellowed somewhat over 40+ years of cellaring leaving excellent examples of wines that will last well into the future.

Italian: The 1975 is widely regarded as an excellent vintage for Tuscany. The wines are generally big on alcohol, colour, extract and acidity. 1975 is remembered for the extremely hot and dry summer which produced grapes of high concentration, although the harvest in Tuscany was complicated by late rainfall. 1975 was without a doubt the outstanding Brunello vintage of the decade and in the opinion of many producers one of the all time greats. The best wines in Chianti were very good indeed.

Portugal: The 1975 vintage port declaration came shortly after the 1974 revolution. Under pressure of nationalisation, the port shippers were keen to show what was possible after a run of weak vintages. Whilst the ports are not in the same league as the other 70's declarations like the 1970 or the 1977, they have stood up well and represent a superb quality vs price ratio. Recent tastings have demonstrated that the best are elegant and a pleasure to drink. The wines are now fully mature, with the top producers producing good '75s that will grow old gracefully. They are elegant, fruity and well balanced but not big. A port from 1975 would make an excellent 48 year old wine gift for a birthday or anniversary.

    Inferno, 1975

    Nino Negri

Inferno is one of five viticultural sub-zones specifically identified as producing Valtellina wines of particularly high quality: the other four are Grumello, Sassella, Maroggia and Valgella. Inferno means 'hell' in Italian, and refers to the slopes between Sondrio town and the village of Tresivio. Although DOC laws do not explain the origins of this name, it has been suggested that in summer the slopes here get noticeably hotter than the rest of the valley. Just across Sondrio to the west is Sassella, the finest of the Valtellina sub-zones.

    Montepulciano, 1975

    d'Abruzzo, Valle d'Oro Tollo - *** BESTSELLER ***

Montepulciano is a red wine grape variety grown widely in central Italy, most notably its eastern Abruzzo, Marche and Molise regions. The variety was named after the Tuscan parish of Montepulciano, but, confusingly, is not used in the famous wines produced there (see Vino Nobile di Montepulciano). Globally appreciated for their soft flavors, strong color and gentle tannins, Montepulciano wines are typically best consumed in their youth and with food. The deep-purple juice of Montepulciano grapes is used in varying proportions to produce wines under roughly 50 of Italy's DOC and DOCG titles. Although sometimes used on its own,

    Castel del Monte, 1975

    Rivera

Castel del Monte is a DOC of the Puglia wine region in south-eastern Italy. Its specialty is red wines (although a tiny amount of white and rosé are also produced) made from Uva di Troia complemented by Aglianico and occasionally Bombino Nero. The 'castle on the hill' referred to in the Castel del Monte name is precisely that: an octagonal 13th-century fortification with a commanding view of the surrounding landscape. Over the centuries the castle (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) has been used as a prison, a plague shelter and finally a source of marble and stone for opportunistic locals. The hill on which it sits is almost perfectly at the center of the DOC's catchment area,
