Overall, the 1977 vintage was far from great. The top reds, fortified and dessert wines from the best regions and producers should still be drinking well but careful research is still advisable.

Our Wine Expert currently recommends the following wines for this year:

  • Taylors Port 1977 Vintage Port
  • Palmer Port 1977 Single Harvest Tawny Port
  • Barbera dAlba 1977 Brero
  • Barolo 1977 Barone Stabilini
  • Chateau Latour 1977 Pauillac 1st Growth Classification

This Year in History: Fun Fact: British Airways launched regular supersonic Concorde service between London and New York.
Eurovision Winner: France with the song " L'Oiseau Et L'Enfant" by Marie Myriam
Born in this Year: Andrew "Freddie" Flintoff, Cricketer, Retired English all-rounder known as "Freddie" who was named ICC ODI Player of the Year in 2004 and ICC Player of the Year in 2005. He finished his Test career with more than 3,000 runs and 200 wickets taken. He won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year honor in 2005, the first cricketer to do so since Ian Botham in 1981.
Top Grossing Movie: Star Wars Ep. IV: A New Hope

Bordeaux: Poor weather throughout the growing season in Bordeaux led to a very small crop of thin, light 1977 wines, most of which were drunk within a few years of the vintage. As a result, wines originating from this vintage are rare.

Italian: 1977 was a good vintage for Italian wines. Top regions such as Tuscany and Piedmont produced rich, full bodied wines - they are now fully mature but will still make good drinking today.

Portugal: The 1977 was a classic vintage, declared by all the major port houses. Even after more than thirty years, the ports are only just becoming approachable and will last for many more decades. The port wines are concentrated, complex, well structured and balanced. Marked by strong tannins, these wines have great finesse and staying power. A 1977 port would make a brilliant wine gift for a birthday, special occasion or anniversary!

    Chateau Latour, 1977

    Pauillac, 1st growth Classification
Upper shoulder / glue striped label

A very rare 1977 first growth wine - the bottles have been stored well and the condition is good. Probably the best wine of a poor Bordeaux vintage. Cellar Tracker reviews mention notes of earthy, mushroom truffles. There are some recommendations not to decant (open and reseal).

    Chateau Montrose, 1977

    St Estephe 2me Cru Classe

This Montrose from 1977 is fully mature and, like so many wines from this difficult vintage, is way past its optimum drinking window. We have found one recent note on this wine in cellar Tracker "Has bit of leathery, animal funk going on. There are also notes of cedar and cassis. It is relatively compact but not too skinny. There's some capsicum and tobacco and other cool things and the finish is bright and airy." Tasted 2016 CellarTracker

    Cossart Gordon Madeira, 1977

    Terrantez Madeira

Cossart Gordon Frasqueira Vintage Madeiras are aged in cask for a minimum of 20 years before being bottled under the supervision of the Madeira Wine Institute. The Frasqeiras then receive an additional two years bottle ageing before release. Madeira is a complex, interesting wine and is made in virtually every vintage. Due to the unique estufagem aging process Madeira is one of the longest-lived wines and also improves for days after opening, but will keep, once opened, for a month and more in a decanter. It makes an ideal wedding or anniversary present. Cossart Gordon Frasqueira-Vintage Madeiras continually fetch the very highest prices at international fine wine auctions.

    Dow's, 1977

    Vintage Port- MAGNUM
Presented in Dows Wooden Gift Case

Please note that this is a rare magnum format (1.5 L)
Medium cranberry red center and slight bricking on the edge. Intoxicating floral fragrance that filled the room, during its nine hour decant; accented by anise, plum and raspberry notes and a bit of spirit. Fresh, fleshy grape, dark cherry and fig flavors melded with underpinnings of licorice, chocolate and warming spirit. It's developing into a stunning middle-aged Port at 34 years of age, with little signs of nearing peak yet. Rich and multi-faceted, smooth and velvety ... even more so the second day it was opened. The acidity was near perfect and the tannins are tame but omnipresent; while the finish was spicy, warm and extremely long.

    Ferreira, 1977

    Vintage port

    Reviews
Very pale mahogany red, watery in texture and weak rim. On the nose are cranberries and brown sugar with just a touch of sweet pea perfume. Wonderful sweetness in the mouth, with golden sultanas over the tart dried cranberries. The tartness is lovely and balances out the sweetness of the wine very well. There is so much complexity in the mid-palate that you can hold this wine in your mouth for ages, but eventually you have to swallow. And when you do there is an explosion of flavour which, after a brief flare of heat, works itself into a very long black licorice and aniseed aftertaste.

    Fonseca Port, 1977

    Vintage Port
    Excellent provenance

Fonseca is one of the great port lodges, producing the most exotic and most complex port. If Fonseca lacks the sheer weight and power of a Taylor, Dow or Warre, or the opulent sweetness and intensity of a Graham, it excels in its magnificently complex, intense bouquet of plummy, cedary, spicy fruit and long, broad, expansive flavors. With its lush, seductive character, one might call it the Pomerol of Vintage ports. When it is young, it often loses out in blind tastings to the heavier, weightier, more tannic wines, but I always find myself upgrading my opinion of Fonseca after it has had 7-10 years of age.

    Graham's Port, 1977

    Vintage Port

The 1977 Graham's vintage port is a stunning example of a fully declared vintage. Intense candied fruit aromas intermingle with cinnamon and clove spice leading to a palate of sweet jammy figs and milk chocolate notes. A fine port with long lingering finish that is ready for drinking now but, obviously as with all great ports, has many years ahead of it.

Monica di Sardegna is a southern wine DOC in Sardinia, based around the town of Cagliari and the eponymous province of which it is the administrative centre. As implied by the name, the key grape variety from which Monica di Sardegna wines are made is the Sardinian curiosity Monica. Montepulciano, 1977

    d'Abruzzo, Dragani

Montepulciano is a red wine grape variety grown widely in central Italy, most notably its eastern Abruzzo, Marche and Molise regions. The variety was named after the Tuscan parish of Montepulciano, but, confusingly, is not used in the famous wines produced there (see Vino Nobile di Montepulciano). Globally appreciated for their soft flavors, strong color and gentle tannins, Montepulciano wines are typically best consumed in their youth and with food. The deep-purple juice of Montepulciano grapes is used in varying proportions to produce wines under roughly 50 of Italy's DOC and DOCG titles. Although sometimes used on its own,

This firm and fruity port from the excellent 1977 vintage is delightful with a medium deep rim, a powerful bouquet with rich, intense jammy fruit, cherry and plum. Also, like rum soaked raisins. Quarles Harris Vintage Port, 1977

    Vintage Port

    ***18/20, Jancis Robinson***

Healthy ruby with a brick rim. Quite subtle already; there is some perceptible evolution of colour and flavour here. Mineral rather than fruit flavours dominate. Very big and full. Very, very sweet indeed - in fact I thought it was from a Portuguese house. This wine delivers a pretty good combination of power, interest and, especially, sweetness. This is not a wine to be ignored! But it's a very particular style....without enormous tannic reserves. Jancis Robinson
