FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — No one was injured after a fire started Friday night at Canterbury Green Apartments on the city’s northeast side.

Firefighters were called out at 6:42 p.m. and arrived to find smoke coming from multiple areas of the building in the 2300 block of Abbey Dr at the apartment complex located northwest of the intersection of Stellhorn and St. Joe.

Crews immediately began to evacuate all occupants in each of the 32 apartments in the building and simultaneously began to search for and extinguish the fire.

The number of people displaced by the fire was not released.

The fire had advanced through interior walls from the first and second floors into the attic.

Extra firefighters were called to assist in controlling the fire due to the size of the building.

FWFD crews brought the blaze under control in 75 minutes and were able to save a considerable amount the structure and contents.

Firefighters said Friday night they would remain on scene to make sure that all embers are extinguished and to protect the property of the occupants.

Grace Hochstetler, Disaster Program Manager with the American Red Cross, received a call about the fire around 7:00 p.m. Friday. Then, a team of volunteers was coordinated to assist the occupants.

“Having the Red Cross here, I find, a lot of the residents are able to take a breath,” volunteer Elizabeth Craft said.

According to Craft, the American Red Cross provided snacks, comfort kits and support.
