1934 Auburn Twelve Salon PhaetonFormerly from the Barbara Atwood CollectionPurchased by noted collector Dr. Barbara Mae Atwood in 1987 from Ervin F. McClellanof Saginaw, Michigan, this Auburn Phaeton Sedan was completely restored in 1990by Steve Babinsky of New Jersey. In 1991, it earned AACA National First Junior andSenior honors, with wins at five AACA regional meets. It also received the ACD Awardfrom AACA that year, but the jewel in its crown was a Second in Class showing atPebble Beach. It received an AACA Grand National First at Dayton, Ohio, in 1992.After nearly two decades, the car retains much of its glow, with its two-tone greenpaint shining deeply and showing virtually no visible flaws. The body is straightand true, with good alignment of doors, all of which shut well. The brightworkis exceptional, with wide trim molding around the beltline, window frames andchrome wire wheels. The car is fitted with Woodlite headlamps and matching cowllamps. The tan canvas top is like new, and a clear plastic cover protects it whilethe car is stored. The seats are handsomely upholstered in green leather with blackpiping. The dashboard and gauges are fully restored. Green carpeting lines the floorof the rear compartment, while a black rubber mat covers the front. The engine isclean and correct, painted dark green with black manifolds and ancillaries. Theundercarriage and running gear are painted in the medium green of the body, andremain virtually spotless.Auburns of the 1930s were incredibly good value. This car sold new for $1,545, lessthan a third of the cost of the equivalent Packard Super Eight. That differential haslong been history, but well-restored Auburns still represent good value in the collectorcar market. More to the point, the Salon Twelve represents the ultimate evolution ofAuburn’s finest car; with only a handful in this condition, this lovely example will shinein any collection of American Classics.4AUBURN FALLSEPTEMBER 1-4, 2011

Cadillacreportedly lost money on every Eldorado built. It was a true “halo car,” however, asit increased the prestige of the entire Cadillac range and was even used in the 1953inaugural parade of U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The Eldorado was powered by Cadillac’s new 210 bhp OHV V-8 engine and wasoffered only one way – fully loaded. The following pages illustrate the many highlights from this wonderful collectionthat we are very proud to present at the Auburn Fall Auction.1957 DeSoto Firedome ConvertibleMost of the credit for Chrysler Corporation’s remarkable record of success on theracetrack and the showroom floor was the direct result of the company’s welldeservedreputation for outstanding engineering – a reputation that certainlycontributed to the successful debut of the new DeSoto model line of 1929. Almostfour centuries after the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto had explored theinterior of North America to discover the mighty Mississippi River, his image andname that now graced the radiators of Chrysler’s new up-market models, whichwere squarely aimed at competitors Oldsmobile and Buick in the marketplace. The DeSoto carved its own niche over the ensuing decades and reaching a pinnacleof popularity in 1957, its third -best year ever. For 1957, all Chrysler Corporationautomobiles featured the second-generation styling of famed designer VirgilExner’s “Forward Look” design theme and one of its most attractive applicationswas to the DeSoto Firedome series. The standard Firedome engine was a 341 cu.in. V-8 unit, which produced a stout 270 bhp with an efficient yet pump-friendly9.25:1 compression ratio, a maintenance-free hydraulic valvetrain, and a twobarrelcarburetor. The Convertible Coupe was the rarest member of the mid-levelFiredome lineup, with just 1,297 examples ultimately manufactured that year. This lovely example is offered from a museum collection and features aquintessentially “fifties” two-tone color scheme, accented by a black convertibletop, dual side view mirrors, chrome-plated wire-basket wheel covers, andwhitewall tires. With its powerful V-8, handsome Virgil Exner-penned stylingand rarity, all this wonderful 1950s icon needs is a new owner to enjoy it.877-906-2437www.auctionsamerica.com37

NASCAR Hemi engine reached its zenith, Chrysler engineers realized that raw horsepower was no longer sufficient to win races. Richard Pettymay have won 27 out of 49 races during the 1968 season in his Hemi-powered Plymouth Satellite, but the aerodynamically advanced Ford Torino enticed Petty to switch over tothe Ford camp in 1969. Chrysler’s only hope of beating Ford on the super speedways was to reduce aerodynamic drag. In response, Chrysler released the bullet-shaped DodgeDaytona and Plymouth Superbird, igniting the “aero wars.” While Richard Petty did not win the 1970 Grand National championship, he did win eight of Plymouth’s 21 victoriesin 1970, and the distinctive Superbird, with its sloped nose and enormous rear wing, became a stock car racing icon.NASCAR homologation requirements mandated that one Superbird be assembled for every two Plymouth dealerships. However, despite their NASCAR success, arrestingpresence and high performance, street Superbird sales were slow thanks to dramatically rising insurance rates and gasoline prices. Most of the 1,920 Superbirds produced, including the example offered here, were equipped with the “Super Commando” 440 ci. V-8 engine, which produced 375 reliable horsepower in stock tune.Offered in excellent overall condition, this fully restored Superbird is finished in Lemon Twist Yellow with a black interior.
