Mention of 'educated porpoises' in the photograph is misleading as the mammals trained and used in the shows were almost always bottlenose dolphins. Marine Studios was one of Florida's first marine mammal parks, is known as 'the world's first oceanarium'. The attraction opened in 1938, with its main draw being the bottlenose dolphin. It was immediately successful. Marine Studios was later renamed 'Marineland of Florida'.

RM2BJTXM2–Bottlenose dolphin 'Flippy' in its holding tank at the Miami Seaquarium, Florida, USA c. 1960. The Seaquarium is a large oceanarium, opened in 1955. Dolphins were given names that suited them, the most famous being Flipper. The first dolphin named Flippy lived at Florida's Marine Studios. In 1949 Flippy entertained the crowds – the act included Flippy towing a woman and a dog around the pool on a surfboard! Marine shows became big all over Florida. However, investigations over the years have shown that keeping and training captive sea mammals can involve animal cruelty and inhumane treatment.
