The 2-door small economy car was built by the Rootes Group to compete with BMC's popular 'Mini' and featured several innovative design elements for it's day, such as a space saving aluminium rear-engine, with rear-wheel-drive. The 'Singer' Imps were badge-engineered Hillmans aimed at the slightly more upmarket small car buyer. But reliability problems plagued the car and its losses saw the British Rootes Group taken over by the American Chrysler Corporation in 1967.

It took firemen three hours, pumping 100 gallons of water a minute, before the blaze was got under control. Warwickshire Fire Brigade said it was the biggest blaze they had ever had to tackle. This was the first Minx with a protruding boot (trunk). The Hillman Minx was a mid-sized British family car produced from 1931 to 1970. There were many versions of the Minx over that period, as well as cars badged as Humber, Singer, and Sunbeam from the Rootes Group, including the Singer Gazelle and Sunbeam Rapier – vintage nineteen-forties graphics.
